Owner Paul Koval began fantasizing about opening a burger joint in 1979. Lucky for burger fans, that dream became a reality in 1989 with Paul's Palace, which devotees say serves some of the best burgers in town. His secret? "A Polish butcher," says Koval with pride. It doesn't hurt, either, that most of the line cooks have been there for over a decade. Their experience shows in the shop's fast turn ... more

The Scene The decor at this small, dark East Village fixture is basic black-and-white-checked diner, but a panoply of cute toys--clowns, tightrope walkers--buzz and whirr overhead. It all makes for a friendly, slightly off-kilter atmosphere that's reinforced by the homespun but sassy service. A couple of TVs show whatever game happens to be on. This towering inferno of hamburgers is an East Village classic. With crazy-quilt decor and some of the best (and biggest) burgers in NYC, it belongs on every itinerary. The burgers are great, the service is a combination of legendary oy vey and schmalz. And did we mention we really, really like the burgers?

I love burgers. I've eaten burgers at every self-professed "best burgers" joint. I can honestly say that without a doubt, Paul's burger was the best I've ever had. The only other place that comes close is Lou's Lunch in New Haven. I got an English burger - just a plain old burger with cheese on an English muffin. It didn't need a thing. The taste of the meat was amazing. I'm surprised they didn't ... more

I went to Paul's Burger Joint last Saturday with my boyfriend, after Self's Workout in the Park. Lol. But we were deciding on Dallas BBQ across the street or Paul's but we were tired of eating chicken at home. Best decision ever made. I had a Cheese Burger Deluxe sub. Sweet Potato fries and Boyfriend had Soul Burger Deluxe. OMG that first ever lovin' bite just melted in my mouth. It was juicy, no ... more

Really good fried burger

brought to you by

There are two types of burgers, fried and flame-broiled, and I usually prefer the flame-broiled. However the burger at Paul's is one of very few fried burgers I love. It's juicy and greasy, but in a good way. It's not that overly greasy taste that leaves you gagging, but rather a good greasiness that makes the burger juicy and yummy. The meat was very fresh and cooked just the way I like it, although ... more

Confused

brought to you by

I am sincerely confused as to what New Yorkers see in this burger joint. It looks and feels the part in every way...we thought we were walking in to a classic burger joint. The service was a bit rude and unwelcoming, but I embrace that at places like this (ex. classic cheese steak joints in Philly). However the burger itself was nearly inedible to me. It was a huge hunk of unseasoned, not caramelized ... more

I absolutely love this place. It is the best burger I have had anywhere in the world (and that includes L.A) PERIOD!! The owner is always there and the burgers are consistenly tasty, juicy and delicious. They are giant and cheap and the three kinds of fries Cajun, Sweet Potatoe and regular are all good. I prefer the cajun though, but last month I liked the sweet potatoe. Shakes and chili are awesome ... more

I've had the great fortune of ordering the East Sider Deluxe (Gigantic burger with heaps of bacon, cheese, mushrooms, sauteed onions, tomato, raw onions, and lettuce.. with mounds of crispy fries on the side) last night and loved it from the first bite to the last greasy crumb. This is coming from a guy who loves red meat and has tasted many different burgers from numerous places around the city ( ... more

Been going here since high school when they had giant reems of paper on the walls for people to sign and fantastic gigantic burgers AND fresh pickles on the tables. Besides the sports theme now, nothing much has changed. If you feel like paying 15-20 clams for a hamburger at a fancy joint, go for it. Leave Pauls to the NYers.

Paul's is a great place for anyone who oves a great burger. The burgers aren't grilled (my preference). Howver, I eat at Paul's whenever I want a guaranteed great meal. You can get ANYTHING you want on your burger...I love the cheddar mushrom burger.
The burger is not made from a fronzen premade patty but real meat you will tase in every bite! Oh, and do try the vanilla shake!!!!!

There's really no reason to come here if you're not having a burger. Cheap, low maintenance, quick and easy.

No matter how many fancy restaurants open up, just admit it, at heart, we're all burger loving slobs.

Pros

Cons

- Don't even bother using the restroom. You might lose your burger.

Not a single memorable thing about this place except the compulsion to right an honest review. I had one of the worst burgers here period. Just a crumbly mess of meat, slice of yellow american, and stale bacon on a kaiser role. Going there based on the rave reviews on menupages, I swear I thought I was in the wrong place. Sadly no...don't make the same mistake I did.

I'm a burger fanatic and Paul's definitely falls way short from the upper echelon of must have NYC burgers. The bun issue can be overcome by opting for a kaiser role, but the meat is tasteless. Not to mention it pretty much fell apart after the first bite...ughh.

I love love love this place! I have only done delivery, but the food is out of this world. I like the turkey burger with blue cheese and carmelized onions. The sweet potato fries are good, but could always be crispier. I disagree with any review that says it is just a pile of steamed meat- my many experiences have always been superb.

Where do you go when you’re craving food before hitting up Pomme Frites for fries?  Paul’s Place! Paul’s is very cramped inside with a lot of cheesy neon lights and random random kitschy items hanging about. With its red and white plastic checker board tablecloths, there’s nothing fancy about this place.

I don't care what any of the haters say. This place has the best burger in the city, bar none. The burgers are large, the meat is cooked perfectly to order - I prefer it medium - and the steak-cut fries are excellent as well.
