Since its 1952 debut in Memphis, Tenn., Holiday Inn has become one of the most recognized hotel brands in the world. Kids rule here: Children age 19 and younger stay for free...
I got upset at the staff after a half hour, was told they would shuttle us to the fair grounds where we had a trade show. There was mostly people staying there from this trade show. Five of us got into the van then was told that wasn't in there area to transport. So we asked the front desk to...
We are currently staying at this hotel and are NOT happy about it (night 1 of 3). Before booking, we called the hotel directly and were told to "ask for a renovated room" as the hotel is being updated. Upon check-in, we were told that "the lobby area is being updated, not the guestrooms." With optimism in mind (and no...
Tiny little rooms with bathrooms hardly big enough to stand in, no counter, interstate noise, rattling furnace/unit, cracked mirrors, tiny pool... not impressed. And for $150 a night! Only perk is location 4 blocks from iowa events center
First of all, the manager was very nice and friendly. I thank him for the smile and helpfullness. I will start with the good: they have a shuttle that will take you pretty much anywhere, restaurants, The Capital, ect.
The bad: the rooms very tiny, you can't adjust the heat, it was 77 degrees in our room the whole time...
I feel sorry for the staff because I can imagine they are doing their best and looking forward to the day when the renovation is complete. They were as nice and cordial as any HI. The lobby is a mess from the construction work, and the indoor garage was third world and dark, but I don't care about that too...
Room was smallish and decor "blah." Bathroom was tiny. Heat was seemed to be on overdrive, thermostat did nothing...good thing the window opened or we would have baked to death. Bed was not very comfortable. Decent location, but not really walkable to downtown entertainment district which is on the other side of an interstate. They are renovating the restaurant and...
This Holiday Inn is conveniently located just north of 235 in Downtown Des Moines - just down the Street from Mercy Medical Center and across the freeway from the IA Event Center / Wells Fargo Arena, etc. I'll give you the Good and Not as Good below, but this is a decent place for a quick stay or easy spot...
I have stayed I. This hotel several times prior to this stay and must say this visit was disappointing. The thermostat was set at 80 upon my entrance to my room, and regardless of heat/cool stayed at 76. I also had dirty pillow cases (blood, chocolate or something with a brownish color). Upon requesting a new pillow, I promptly had...
Horrible hotel... A/c won't cool the room... Outlets behind headboard waiting for electric fire.. Won't let pizza guy deliver to room
Free shuttle within mile radius! Awesome breakfast via room service. Quiet hotel. Great service!
Free shuttle to court avenue and area restaurants....remember to tip your drivers ..:-)
The room was spotless. Kham cleaned it; she is excellent. The staff is very friendly.\n\nThe building is old.
The one front desk clerk and the beds\n\ncouldn't control the heat\n\nIt was nice for being in remodel mode. I liked the rooms except the window was broken and I could hear the interstate. The bed was the best thing.
There was enough staff to check us in/out, that we didn't have to wait.\n\nThe name is decieving, it is not in Downtown Des Moines, to far to walk.
It was conveniently located for downtown activities.\n\nIt was a little small and not as update as it could be.\n\nIt was clean, comfortable, and conveniently located to downtown. The staff was friendly. For the price, the room was smaller than other places I have stayed and could be updated a little. But this didn't detract from my experience.
This hotel is central to the city and located close to Mercy Hospital, my reason for visiting the city. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and well appointed, with pillows of soft of firm - a nice touch. Staff was especially helpful, friendly, accommodating, and offered dierections, advice and recommendations quickly and accurately. My only problem was that I could not...
Clean and looked nice.\n\nThe windows were not good. There was a buzzing noise from the wind. The bathroom was rather small, but was happy for what we paid.\n\nLooked nice at a glance. Only stayed overnight and didn't spend any time in other parts of the hotel, so unable to give a good review.
The hotel was convenient to the locations I was interested in.\n\nI did not like paying a 3 star rate for what is a 2 star hotel. The room had been refurbished but there were paint spatters on the bathroom counter. The metal doors were chipped and painted over. The 'fitness center' consists of two adjoining rooms whe\n\nI have stayed in Holiday Inns over the years and would stay in this one...
Bedding\n\nThe bar smelled like raw sewage. They did not have a lot of brands of beer to choose from. Bartender female was strange. She didn't seem real enthused about us being there. Again smelled bad. Dirty sink at bar and dirty glass. The night bartender was gre\n\nDon't go to the bar if the blonde older woman is working. Also smelly sewage scent in the air in bar
Great location for my seminar at the Iowa Events Center.\n\nRooms are outdated, but I thought I read that they are in the process of updating them.
I'm sitting in the lobby of Holiday Inn and I'm asked "Would you like a cup of coffee?" Who does that? The staff at the Holiday Inn.
Mark Murphy the food and Beverage Director was so friendly and professional and didn't even know who I was when he asked. He just cared. And that's what it's like here from the...
It is located right off the interstate.\n\nLimited parking on the ground level.\n\nI was very pleased with our recent stay at the Holiday Inn in Des Moines. The staff was friendly, check in and out was quick, and the rooms were very nice. The big plus was free parking.
For the price paid, I believe more than 1 breakfast should be included.
Staff was great and very accommodating.\n\nSits next to I-235, noise level to this country boy too much. Need to open windows on winter air into I-235.\n\n
Great location, quite close to Downtown. Excellent staff. I had a hard time sleeping first night, as I live in the boondocks, and facing out onto a heavily traveled Interstate on a warm night needing to open rooms. Made the room either...
It was in a good location close to downtown. The staff was nice. Their free shuttle stopped at 11 PM but the driver was still kind to drop us at our location after that time.
\n\n
The air conditioning was not working in our room. It was OK at night when the sun was down to get cooler but during the day it was a little on the warm side.
\n\n
This hotel has a free shuttle that runs until 11 PM...
It was very conveniently locatedand close to the interstate and to downtown.\n\nThe ACdid not work and they billed an extra $15 to my credit card with no explanation.
Stayed here for a conference.
Pros: It's a hotel. There are rooms. They are clean and serve a purpose. There was a computer with internet you could use in the lobby and the wifi was free. So, that was cool. Very nice people work at the desk. You can walk to downtown Des Moines, but it's bit far.
Cons: A...
The rooms were great. They were spacious, clean, and modern, as was the rest of the facility.\n\nThe parking lot was under renovation at the time of our stay, so it was difficult to find space on the surface lot. They do have an underground parking facility, but the design is not the best. There were too many concrete support beams making it very tou
We stayed here while in town for a show at the Civic Center. They have a shuttle that will take you downtown so that was very convenient. Check in was really quick & everyone at the front desk was very friendly. We didn't spend much time in the room so it was fine for what we needed, however the temp...
This hotel turns off the A/C system very early when the outdoor temperatures are in the mid 70's to low 80's outdoors. While the outdoor temperature is not that hot my room was 80+ degrees and the window only opens three inches and faced the interstate highway. When I called to report the malfunctioning ac system I was told it...
Good food at reasonable price.\n\nAir conditioner did not work.\n\nAs stated earlier the AC did not work. I did not inform the front desk, because it never got above 74 degrees in the room. It was col enough outside, that it was a non issue so in all fairness, I gave them no chance to make it right.
The location to Drake University was very nice. Location right off highway was convenient.\n\nThe location is not in a safe area; also to no fault of the hotel the city was resurfacing the streets and the noise & pollution was terrible.\n\nHotel is old and the lobby needs some updating. There were many people milling about outside the main entrance smoking which was rather unpleasant upon...
Nothing\n\nRoom was noisy, small, windows rattled, and poor parking accommodations.\n\nOver priced, rated much too high, rooms small, bathroom small and tub drain did not work.
Good location.\n\nVery noisy and in general a very dated hotel.
Security in the parking lot was lacking.\n\nHotel was clean and functional. The brunch was cheap and not bad.
Only air conditioning in summerand heat in winter, not both, so if it's a cold summer day,you freezein the room. Also, bad seals on the windows.
The hotel appeared quite nice and the room was updated but they shouldn't have rented that room and should have compensated us for the horrible smell. Someone/something had obviously urinated in the room and it wasn't properly cleaned. In fact, we weren't sure that it wasn't still fresh someplace but didn't go looking for fear of finding it (corner is...
Free shuttle service.\n\nOlder needs updating.\n\nThe free shuttle service was the best amenity the hotel had to offer. The staff was very friendly. The lounge and restaurant need an update.
My husband and I recently stayed here one night for the Hy Vee Triathlon and chose the hotel for it's location and it was a host hotel for the event. There are many positives about this hotel: location is half mile from downtown convention center and easy access to freeway. The hotel has a free shuttle for airport and downtown....
Overall a good stay in a clean, comfortable room. Nice location for dining, walking, highway access, etc.
My room was facing the highway which was continuously loud. The hotel is directly across from a hospital and one night there were literally sirens every hour. The walls are also very thin, I heard my neighbor sneeze and flush their toilet several...
Most downtown hotels are great deals on the weekend. I got a huge room with king bed large sofa and big bath. It was a very spacious room. No free breakfast. Right off I-235. Convenient to Hy-Vee center. Staff was friendly. Parking was provided and free. I would recommend it as a good buy.
I did stay next to a...
It had a bar and restaurant in it. Good shuttle too.\n\nNot many king size bed rooms.\n\nGood downtown location. We used the shuttle van and they were very accommodating.
Bathroom very small. Shower knobs very tight and hard to control.
Convenient location & shuttle service, best shower pressure!\n\nThe bathroom was pretty small and only supplied 3 sets of towels for 4 travelers.
Free shuttle within a 2 mile radius\n\nTiny bathroom\n\nThe rooms have been updated recently in terms of decor. However they are still somewhat dated, large mirrored wall, poor sound control on the windows, tiny bathroom and stained ceiling were the negatives. Positive is the room was clean as were the hallways. The lower level of the parking garage looked a bit scary due to some dangling...
This hotel was fine for a business trip. I was on the 9th floor and checked in on a saturday when a wedding was happening above me on the 10th floor. It was loud until midnight then stopped - luckily that was the only night an event was occuring so it was quiet the rest of the time. The staff...
I came in late with out a reservation and found they wanted 149 for a room. With sticker shock I advised I would like to redeem priority club points. Was told can only do that online. WTF? Online computer room had the slowest connection, took like 15 minutes to book the room then go out and check in. Cell phone...
As I travel I am learning that Holiday Inns are not what they used to be when I was a kid. This particular location is in need for a major renovation. The public spaces are fine, but the rooms themselves are no better than some off the highway motor hotel. I was quite disappointed in the amenties, the cleanliness, and...
Mercy Campus - really hard to tell, but one of my kids has bites all over her shoulders and body. It started after our stay at this hotel on 8/3. I did not see any bugs, but may have overlook in our check.
Was greeted by a charming and professional young man named Jarryd. He set up the whole good expreience for me. Answered all my questions, was kind and patient. Hotel has nice, clean rooms, and is close to everything. Fairly quiet, for being off an interstate. Bar and restaurant work too.
On July 26, 2012, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Downtown Des MOines. When I woke up on Monday morning I turned on the light and got out of bed and saw a bug crawling across the bed. I grabbed it and killed it. It was hard to kill and I thought it was a tick. I then wondered if it was a bed bug and I looked it up on the internet and it was a perfect match. I took the bug and showed it to the front...
We have been traveling across country and have stayed in a few hotels on the way. We were disappointed in the room and amenities that came with this hotel.
The room, although clean, was not very large. The counter in the bathroom was so small that we could not fit our toiletries on there. The only counter was around the...
It was easy to find off the interstate\n\nthe parking area- thin walls- loud interstate noise- the view was of the crappy parking lot.\n\nThe Hotel is very beautiful, tall and elegant, near the downtown. Friendly staff and nice rooms...... as long as you can look past the horrible parking lot and you like to listen to the people next door, above, below and down the hall from you due to the thin...
We stayed here for a night while attending a brewfest in downtown Des Moines. We got to check in early and got a high floor room with a view. The shuttle took us to the event at 3 and picked us up at 6. We had dinner in the bar at the hotel. Overall, we thought it was a very...
We had inadvertently booked this hotel through Hotels.com on our way to Des Moines after our prior arrangements were unavailable. I had difficulty hearing what the woman on the other end was saying due to travel noise as well as background noise from where she was talking. On arrival, our room was not the King bed room we had reserved....
We came here for a night as we were visiting Des Moines as tourists. I booked this hotel based on the price and the average reviews. It is only slightly removed from the downtown area, but since we had a car rental, we assumed it would be fine.
From the moment we arrived, we were very pleased. The staff made...
Spent 7/5 and 7/6/2012 here and thought it was average in most ways. HOWEVER, the staff was nice and gave me the Priority Club "goody bag" without me having to ask if we had one. We were there for the Natl. Oldsmobile Car Show at the Events Center and the hotel provided free shuttle service to and from at no...
Ate here 7/5/12 an hour before closing. Waitress just finished waiting on a table with 5 gentlemen and rushed past us saying, "Be back to take your order in just a minute." Ten minutes later and no waitress. Finally the hostess who seated us appeared and no apology for the long, long wait. She took our orders and did not...
Easy access to streets, easy parking, location.\n\nIt would be nice to have a small frig available.\n\nClean, personnel were professional, good location.
Easy access to streets, easy parking, location.\n\nIt would be nice to have a small fridge available.
The front desk staff was friendly and helpful!\n\nRooms were clean but small, building is older & decor reflects that.\n\nThe girl at the front desk was great! This young lady was quite the opposite. Rooms were clean, but small. It seems to be an older building, and the mirrored wall in the room seemed to reflect that. Overall, it was just fine though. Would stay again!
Great staff -- especially man who got us into the room we wanted.
The hotel staff was friendly and efficient.\n\nThe entrance to the hotel from the parking level was creepy-isolated, unattractive and with only one visible exit.\n\nNo frills, but free internet, friendly, efficient staff and a convenient location make this a nice hotel. We did not run out of hot water in the mornings, and our room was extremely quiet.
Stayed here because they have a hospital rate. Desk staff ok. Woke with a couple dozen bites on my legs. Asked for a manager, told her about the issue, and showed her a picture of the bites. She seemed ptty indifferent - claimed to have never seen a bedbug bite and said she would have housekeeping check the room after...
Front desk helpful and allowed us to pick the location of our room, and we had a wonderful view!\n\nWanted to tour the top floor, but there was a retirement party going on. Could be updated some.\n\nGreat view on the south side, top floors. Friendly, helpful staff, nice location to access downtown and Event Center.
Close to the interstate.\n\nNot within walking distance to downtoan as advertised.\n\nNot a 3 star hotel. 2.5 stars, probably, but not 3.
Just off the Interstate in the middle of the city with free parking--a great way to start my stay there. I was there to present at a seminar for a couple of days. Greeted nicely at check-in and got the usual goodie bag as a Platinum member without having to ask for it. Lobby was comfortable and exceptionally clean.
Staff...
Hotel was close to the Iowa State Fairgrounds which is where we were attending a wedding.\n\nHighway traffic was a bit loud.\n\nOverall, hotel was nice... but I would probably choose a hotel in the heart of downtown instead to avoid the traffic noise.
We were afraid it would be too far to walk downtown but it was a perfect walk!\n\nThis was a wonderfully beautiful surprise of a perfect overnight stay for my friend and I! We were afraid it was too far from downtown and we would have to take the free shuttle instead of walking, but it turned out to be a perfect walk on brightly lit, well-manicured sidewalks! Just a superb stay from start to...
We only stayed one night.\n\nEverything.\n\nTerrible. Never stay here. Even the people in Des Moines who had never stayed there heard about what a terrible place it is. Just tear it down.
After I checked into the hotel for 4 nights, I asked the desk clerk about free breakfast certificates since I'm a Platinum member and I have received them in the past when I stayed here. The response I received was a little shocking. "Sorry, but you should have never received them in the first place since government rates are below...
Friendliness of staff and ease of check-in and check-out.\n\nLocation - it is in a very dangerous area of town.\n\nThe staff, especially the woman who checked me in and out, were fantastic. The ease of check-in immediately stood out. The main lobby facilities are beautiful! However, the room was dark, and while the bathroom was clean, it was small and very old with a rusty vent, cracked tiles,...
The helpfulness and courtesy of all staff hotel and restaurant was immeasurable.\n\nDuring the morning, elevator got tied up with housekeeping personnel. Perhaps designating 1 of the 3 elevators for housekeeping would be prudent.
Staff was great - very friendly and very helpful --- and flexible. Parking was on-site and did not have an extra charge for it -- which was nice.\n\nIt's old and not really very pleasant in the rooms.
I stayed here for a convention that took place at the new Vets convention Center. I did not have to navigate downtown traffic but had an awesome view of the city. Very nice for the price I paid, very clean rooms, attentive staff, free parking,wi fi, & breakfast. The fitness center was a diassapointment. I was worried about noise from...
Very friendly helpful staff\n\nno refrig in room\n\nThis hotel is convenient to walking distance to the arena, and offers a shuttle for free. The staff is beyond nice and helpful especially the bell hop. Very busy weekend for hotel which seemed to stretch the limits of staff ability to cover bar area and restaurant at times. We had to wait for bartender in lounge. Bar hours are very limited....
Aside from the central location and the free wifi, there is not much good to say about my one week stay here. Defiantly not my worst experience, however at this price point it should have been way better. Rooms havent been updated in years, poor repair jobs throughout, tiny bathrooms, parking lot and garage look hazardous, and the 10 breakfast...
The staff were very friendly and recomended a great place to eat. The bar in the hotel was nice and not small. Bed was a little hard for my taste but the pillows were great. Wifi works well...not real slow like some places. I would stay again
The hotel staff was very friendly and worked hard to make your stay a good one.\n\nThe location of this hotel was very loud and it was hard to get a restful nights sleep.\n\nDuring our stay at this hotel we found that the rooms were very small. The room was also out dated and would benefit from some remodeling. Due to it's location it was difficult to get a restful nights sleep. There is a...
It wasnt the greatest hotel but it was OK for what we needed. Lacked amenities but made up for them by having a free shuttle ( within 2 miles of the hotel). The rooms were simple but clean and we did have a little trouble with ambulance siren in the middle of the night ( next to a hospital )
I had my wedding reception here last May (Des Moines room). I was planning on having my wedding in Vegas & changed plans last minute. Diane was very helpful with me getting everything arranged last minute. The staff got everything set up for my reception so it was ready as guests arrived after the wedding. I had some minute details...
Free parking.\n\nA mile from downtown; rooms are plaster over concrete, open closet area, bathroom metal furnishings rusted.\n\nThis is definitely not the first choice of business travelers with business in the downtown. The room was clean and well furnished, but the open closet area and the rusting metal frame and towel rack in the bathroom were off putting. Definitely not three-star.
I stay in this hotel quite often and the quality and service of the hotel, restaurant, and bar never varies. Besides simply being a great place to eat, drink, and sleep, the location is super if you are going to the Iowa Events Center or the Wells Fargo Arena. Just check in, grab a free shuttle and give the hotel...
Friendly staff.\n\nTiny bathroom; no hot tub; unreliable shuttle; old elevator; rooms not soundproof.\n\nI would not stay here again. Bathroom so small, I couldn't move without knocking something over. Zero counter space. Getting in and out of room was made difficult by closet area being next to door. Not connected to skywalk, even though I was told otherwise when I called, prior to booking.
Had a great experience. I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and have never been disappointed. The staff was kind and courteous, the shuttle is a convenient tool to get around in downtown Des Moines and the rooms are always clean. This is a great place to stay and enjoy Des Moines. The hotel has a...
Went with a group of guys for a meal while in town on business. Ended up eating there every night we were in town, the food was good, reasonably priced and the staff was friendly.
It was clean.\n\nNothing special.\n\nBilled as a 3+ star hotel, this was a disappointment, particularly for the price. Location was "downtown" but was not pedestrian friendly. Though clean, the room was worn and tiny as was the bathroom.
This is a great option in Downtown Des Moines, close to the hospital and not too far from the Capitol. The property needs improvements across the board, but the place is not a dump. They always put me in a larger room on one of the top floors.
This aging hotel has a friendly staff at the front desk but not always in the restaurant "Genevieve" where you can have a not so good breakfast. The location right next to the I-235 is convenient but has its downside: bring your earplugs.
Downtown Des Moines is only a 3-4 minutes drive away and you can use the hotel shuttle...
Not so friendly service. No bread. Dark and outdated atmosphere.
Nice staff, nice priority club (platinum member) welcome gift with a snack and small bottle of water. I got a suite right next to elevator, some noise, room had a mini fridge, new carpet, bed, tv and furniture. Could tell hotel is aging in bathroom and drafty window that made bad sounds on the rather windy night, some body hair...
Rough around the edges even though recently refurbished. Parking limited and garage dilapidated.
Location was convenient to downtown.\n\nHeat did not work well and Fitness center was dirty and equipment not maintained.\n\nGood location, but an older hotel that is clean, but does not have the amenities of newer Holiday Inns. Staff was helpful but not overly so. Mechanical systems are old and unreliable.
Location was close to the wedding we were attending.\n\nParking was horrible.
convenience\n\nprice\n\nHotel is a little outdated but safe and clean.
Convenient location right off 1-235 in the heart of downtown - we walked to the Civic Center and nearby restaurants. It is clean and neat although a little outdated. We had complimentary apps in the first floor lounge, which was nice, as well as free popcorn!
Stayed 4 nights in October for business. I am a platinum member so I'm not for sure if my room was an upgrade or not. It was fairly large with a sofa, but it wasn't a suite either.
The hotel can either have the a/c on or the heat on, not both. In this case...both were turned off. The first...
Nice King size bed.\n\nNot enough available outlet for computers and chargers.
Convenient location, and helpful staff.\n\nClean and for the price we were happy with what we got. It was mostly a place to stay in a convenient location. Very friendly staff and it was nice to be able to use the hotel van service so we could leave our car in the parking lot.
This hotel was average at an above average price. Great location - near the quilt show. If you got the quilt show rate, there was no free breakfast - cost $125.44 per night, with no free breakfast!!!!! The room was old, painted suspended ceiling in very small bathroom, painted toilet seat (!), no individual heating/cooling, and some strange mirrored wall....
This is a very nice, clean hotel in a great location. Easy access to the interstate and close to down town.
A very reasonable value for the dollar. But this is an older hotel, and it is showing signs of it. It is a half-step below what I would expect from a "good" business-class hotel, hence the rating (it easily could have gotten four stars). First, the minuses. There are no restaurants (other than a McDonald's) within walking distance. The bathroom...
This place was a dump. My room faced the expressway and the window would not lock. A poor nights sleep coupled with carpet that stuck to your feet and...
I never sleep between the sheets in hotels, I never take my socks off, I always wear shoes or house slippers to walk on the floor. This is because they do not look/feel/smell/seem clean enough to do this. HOWEVER...I DID sleep between the sheets at this hotel! I DID take my shoes off to walk on the floor. IN FACT,...
I was recently in Des Moines to umpire a youth baseball tournament. The organizers provided the hotel accommodations, so I did not select this hotel. Driving into Des Moines from the northeast on Interstate 235 many times, I had seen this Holiday Inn before and was interested to check it out. I spent two nights in room 503 in early...
The staff is extremely friendly. The rooms are very clean. Everything else is just Meh. A very tired and dated property. Lobby and F&B space generally...
Room 503 had cracked mirror tiles on the walls
We were given a room with 2 beds (for our anniversary?) I had even sent an email to the hotel before we arrived explaining that this was our anniversary and received no response
No free local calls
No complimentary breakfast bar,
Doors slamming all night long due to teens roaming the...
In response to the bed bug encounter from room 716, The Holiday Inn Downton had their pest inpection company come in and inspect the room upon her departure and they did not find any signs of bed bugs in that room. The Holiday Inn Downtown take this issue very seriously has is taking all the necessary precautions to prevent bed bugs in the hotel.
If you're unlucky enough to be stuck in downtown Des Moines (it's actually not that bad), this is a great location to stay. There are numerous bars and restaurants within walking distance and we paid less than $75 for our room.
This place is conveniently located right off the offramp to I - 235. The upper floors have a magnificent view of downtown Des Moines at night. The pool is spacious, wet and comfy... They have a…
