Since its 1952 debut in Memphis, Tenn., Holiday Inn has become one of the most recognized hotel brands in the world. Kids rule here: Children age 19 and younger stay for free...
Very old hotel that is starting to get a facelift. Location is pretty good, close to the events center (walkable), but also right next to the interstate and there were a LOT of sirens all night. The area to the north is sketchy and the fairly heavy security presence at night is not confidence-inspiring.
The lobby has been completely renovated...
We visited Des Moines from Cedar Rapids for a friends wedding. We had a place to stay for free but instead decided to splurge on a hotel room for the night. We used Hotwire like usual for a nicer hotel. We were SO disappointed. The receptionist was incredibly rude. There were only 9 floors and only two of the three...
I was horrified to find a BED BUG in my bed. I looked up bed bug photos to be sure and I am positive it was an adult bed bug! Perhaps even worse, when I requested a room change the staff were not the slightest bit concerned or apologetic. They agreed to give me a new room, to their credit,...
This is the poorest Holiday Inn I have stayed in in a long time. I predict in a few years the franchise will change to Best Western or some off-name hotel, or perhaps be leveled. They are currently trying to renovate the hotel. The lobby is nice, but the rooms are dated, the walls are thin, the bathroom is old...
First, as a place to sleep away from home, it was fine. Bed was comfy, TV worked, shower worked, air worked, it was good in that regard.
Positives: the USB adaptor plug ins were a life saver because I forgot my charger at home. The room I had looked to be one of the more recent remodels and it was...
Hotel is being refurbished - and it does need some investment. I have a hip that needs replacing, front desk person said room was a couple of doors from elevator - was 3/4 down the hall. Saturday morning 8:45am asked maid to return in 30 minutes, never made up room.
I would normally not go out of my way to give a bad rating to a hotel, but my family's experience was not good at all. First of all, after checking in, we quickly found out only one of the three elevators actually worked (and took forever to get to the second floor). Once we got to our room, the...
I stayed here a couple years ago, and the place seemed dated and kind of "off". I returned last week, and the atmosphere was nice, and the staff was kind enough to put us into rooms close to our friends. We had a very nice stay, and everyone was friendly. This is an inexpensive, convenient choice - it might not...
On the positive side, there was a small buffet breakfast included. We also had a nice view of the capitol area, free parking, and a medium indoor pool. On the down side, the room smelled very musty and had an incredibly loud fan that kept us up most of the night. The beds were way too soft. The windows were...
We stayed at The Holiday Inn Des Moines Downtown for three days while attending the Des Moines Metro Opera summer festival in July in Indianola. Our stay was entirely pleasant. The complimentary buffet breakfast was somewhat unusual in that the wait staff attended the tables with frequent water and coffee refills and other friendly attention. Parking is mostly close to...
We stayed at this hotel for a wedding. Ended up with over a dozen bites. We even captured two bed bugs, which we showed the staff. The hotel was great about the situation, but we still need to let people know. Beware!
I love this hotel! Its classy! The interiors and architectural designs are great! You will definitely feel like a royalty.
the location was ideal for where we needed to go in Des Moines. The staff was amazing! Extremely helpful and very nice. The lobby/bar area was beautiful.\n\nI really wasn't impressed with the room itself. It was spotless but felt very dated.\n\nComfy beds, great view -overall was a pleasant stay at the location.
Great location to Event Center. Great shuttle service to downtown area resturants and bars.\n\nThat the shuttle quit running at 11:00 to downtown area. There is more than enough need to have the shuttle run until 2:00 A.M. I'm guessin the hotel doesn't like this idea because they like the business back at their own resturant bar after 11:00.
The staff was very good and the upgrade was great!\n\nReally nothing, I would stay there again.
Locatio\n\nCleanliness and outdated no remote control and expensive
Good location, good price, amenities were fine\n\nThe room was way too warm. No matter how low we tried to turn the thermostat, the temp never dropped below 75. Sweating too much to stay asleep.
The pool was great\n\nToo noisy at night. Could also hear next door neighbors throught bathroom vents
The room was clean. The Bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows.\n\nHad to keep the bathroom door closed to avoid hearing next door conversations through the vent.
Its location and cost.\n\nThe air conditioner didn't work in my room. It sounded as if there was a rodent running through the HVAC unit all night.
Front desk staff were pleasant. Easy to find close to interstate. Plenty of free parking.
Lobby area recently updated, seemed nice.\n\nI-235 is way too noisy - which would not be too much of a problem if the HVAC system had a "fan on" option. If you had something to drown the noise, it would help. HVAC system needs updated, along with the rooms. This is a 2.5 star hotel at most.
The lobby had been remodeled.... gave a false front to the rest of the hotel.\n\nThe meeting room was shabby with flickering lights. The halls stank of cigarette smoke. Our room was supposed to be 2 queens, but was 2 doubles. The bathroom, the size of a 1960 bathroom, the toilet didn't function properly and the shower didn't drain.
Location\n\nDesk help was very rude at check in and lied to me. Stuck me right across from the elevator. work out room was a dump.
Close to get on/off freeway.\n\nStaff service was average at best. Need to complete renovations.
Clean, appropriate\n\nCheck in procedure took to long, no sundries store or vending which I would expect for 3 stars, had to go to four floors to buy a $2 water which annoyed me.
Location was good. Underground free parking was very nice and so was free internet.\n\nWeather was very cold and some of the coldness came in through the window. Hotel is a little worn and decor and public places could use a facelift.
Location and cleanliness\n\nNo hot tub and construction going on
Our handicapped accessible shower and parking space were an amazing plus.\n\nThe entrance was far from the elevators in our situation. But there were enough benches for my husband to take breaks. He has ms, so longer distances are tough.
It was available on short notice in my price range\n\nNope\n\nI only spent one night. Not enough time to form a strong opinion
Front desk staff were great! Housekeeper, (head of) was very helpful and pleasant and room and public areas very clean. Shuttle drivers were excellent. Perfect location.\n\nThey shut the air conditioning off completely during this time of year, so there is no way to cool the room at all. It was over 80 degrees in our room which made the stay not very pleasant at all!
This guest did not leave comments about this hotel.
The indoor pool was great. The lobby was very pretty and modern. The pillows were amazing and the room was clean - although on the smaller side.\n\nThe heating/cooling system only allows for the hotel to offer one at a time... so they were only offering heat. Even with our window open and the system in our room turned off, our room was 74 degrees. We were sweating!
Downstairs was new and renovated\n\nRooms old. Rooms to hot in November and could not cool down with Air due to old heating/cooling system, cooling not option in Winter months. Even opening the windows all night would not cool the room down.\n\nDon't sleep on side overlooking downtown. Interstate traffic is loud on that side.
The lobby to the hotel was beautiful, the breakfast area inviting, the breakfast buffet very good, the beds were comfortable.\n\n2 of the elevators were down so it was a long wait, about 10 minutes to get on. We tried to take the stairs from level one down to the lobby, but the stairway didn't go to the lobby, only to the garage. So we thought that was strange.\n\nThe breakfast is not free.
Cleanliness, easy access from highway, easy free covered parking, excellent restaurant with friendly staff, free internet\n\nWhile the in the room we could hear quite a bit of noise from the hallway, the ballroom music, and from nearby rooms. We did NOT hear highway noise nor the hospital helicopter.
shuttle service was very helpful and willing to take us back and forth to dinner\n\nlocation really is about 6-7n minute ride from downtown and away forma ll other downtown hotels the elevators were like riding a roller coaster... a little scary
The staff were wonderful. Hotel was old but very maintained. Bed was comfortable.\n\nNo
Close to event attending and dinner restaurant chosne.\n\n1. Mercy Hospital noisy helicopter hovering. Two landings. 2. All night humming noise coming from somewhere outside. 3. Windows not sealed and room temperature a bit cold. 4. Room smaller than depicted online.
location was close to what we needed. the staff was a great help for the most part. room was clean\n\nit need to be up dated kinda shabby around the edges, that didn't effect my sleep at all, but it could use some help
Bar staff was good.\n\nLocation is terrible if you are not staying in Des Moines for the nearby hospital.
The parking entrance was not well signed. We ended up in a one way loop one block away because the parking entrance was not marked. We arrived at night and the parking entrance was hidden behind a fence.\n\nFront desk staff was very helpful.
Friendly staff--they provided good restaurant recommendations and arranged free shuttle transportation to/from the restaurant we chose.\n\nThe room was too warm, and I could not adjust the temperature to be cooler.
Not a bad value for the money based on the star level. The room was a decent size (although the bathroom was small) and it was clean and comfortable. Free wi-fi was a nice plus, and it was easy to use and fast. Easy to get your own ice.\n\nRoad noise, construction noise INSIDE hotel (literally a saw), bar was closed before 11 PM when we were told it was supposed to be open until 1 AM, and...
The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel lobby was nice. The shuttle was on time for pick up at the airport.\n\nThe room was below average. Not what I would expect from a 3 Star hotel.
The lounge was comfortable and relaxing.\n\nThe window in our room did not shut completely. This allowed quite a bit of road noise from the nearby interstate to come in.
The staff was excellent making accommodations above and beyond their requirements.
Nice enough room but traffic noise was pretty loud all night and they really need to change their coffee provider!
The hotel staff was very professional and courtesy. They helped with the questions that I had.\n\nThe only down fall was the ac was kind of loud, but other than that it was a very good stay.\n\nI really liked the hours of the swimming pool and the tower on the top floor. You could see everything from there.
The publish areas were very nice. I appreciate the effort they have done to make the rooms better even though they are very dates. (Sound machines, curved shower bars, extra plug-ins for electronics, free wifi.)\n\nIt is very dated and it is right above the interstate.\n\nLiterally overlooking the interstate. The rooms are very dated. However, the hotel has done what it could to improve the...
I liked the appearance of the lounge, restaurant and the room.\n\nNo hot tub! And no free breakfast (I've been staying at holiday inn expresses the week before). The parking is atrocious, as I had to park on the street one night.\n\nVery pretty!
Location to our event.\n\nThey didn't do room service and then wanted me to make the trip to the front desk to get towels, etc
The hotel and specifically my room was very clean and inviting. The bed was very comfortable and the linens were exceptionally clean. All of the staff that I came in contact with were very friendly and helpful. The shuttle service at the hotel is amazing.\n\nIt was disappointing that the room service ends at like 11pm, but it wasn't even a big deal. Wish there was a hot tub.\n\nThe swimming...
it was full service, I could eat there and not have to go out and order cheap/bad/fast food\n\nthe room got intolerably hot by 1am, and when reported, they gave me a floor fan to cool down. I asked for the quiet side of the hotel, and got the noisy side, complete with ambulances, car horns, etc.
Very polite. Shuttle to downtown and back is great! Quick access in and off interstate.\n\nI can hear everything from bathroom vents. Everything. As long as another person is in bathroom.\n\nOverall always a good choice. Location not bad and shuttle helps. One side you'll deal with hospital helicopter taking off regularly. Other side there is decent interstate noise...
Staff very helpful, bar area great, shuttle buses were fantastic about getting you where you want to go and come pick you up. Easy.\n\nA little outdated, bathrooms were too small.
We had a junior king suite for our family and had plenty of room, the room was always clean, the pool was great as was the bar/restaurant.\n\nParking!! Parking if you're driving a truck or other large/tall vehicle is terrible. Outdoor parking should be reserved for trucks/vans and large suv's as the garage parking is out of the question for full size trucks/vans!
Location - convenience to our destination\n\nThe hotel was 'dated'. Definitely time to remodel rooms. Bathroom was very small. Noisy neighbors that kept us up into the early hours - 2am. Two calls to the front desk didn't deter them. Upon check-out, the staff did not ask, nor care about our stay.\n\nThe worst parking experience I've seen at a hotel in a long time - especially one with a...
The location was nice. The food from the restaurant was VERY good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. All bedding was white. I like that because you can see if the bedding is clean. \n\nThey offered a continental breakfast, but it wasn't free- it cost 9.50 for juice and toast, and another dollar on top of that if you want eggs or meat. I didn't purchase it, but that was according to...
We needed to be downtown at an early hour and this hotel was in a great location\n\nOn a busy night parking is limited, but the front desk told us we could park in "non-official" parking spots within the hotel parking lot.\n\nLobby and front desk is very cool. Very close to downtown, staff was very friendly and helpful.
The staff was great very friendly. The room was amazing and when I got there I asked for a fridge and they accommodated me right away. Bed was so comfortable. The view was great of Des Moines as well.\n\nNot really the best area of Des Moines but the hotel has always been known in that spot.\n\nOverall I loved my stay and for the price definitely met my expectations and beyond.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.\n\nOur room smelled like smoke. No refrigerator in the room.
Overall great-to-excellent experience. Very nice hotel, service was great, and we appreciated.
Mercy Campus - really hard to tell, but one of my kids has bites all over her shoulders and body. It started after our stay at this hotel on 8/3. I did not see any bugs, but may have overlook in our check.
On July 26, 2012, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Downtown Des MOines. When I woke up on Monday morning I turned on the light and got out of bed and saw a bug crawling across the bed. I grabbed it and killed it. It was hard to kill and I thought it was a tick. I then wondered if it was a bed bug and I looked it up on the internet and it was a perfect match. I took the bug and showed it to the front...
In response to the bed bug encounter from room 716, The Holiday Inn Downton had their pest inpection company come in and inspect the room upon her departure and they did not find any signs of bed bugs in that room. The Holiday Inn Downtown take this issue very seriously has is taking all the necessary precautions to prevent bed bugs in the hotel.
Room 716 was infested with bedbugs. I stayed in this room from Oct. 7-10. I am covered in welts and scratching myself to death. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction to something. I am terrified I brought them home with me. I reported bed bugs to the front desk at my departure. I also called the day before my departure to ask if there had been any reports of bed bugs and was assured...
If you're unlucky enough to be stuck in downtown Des Moines (it's actually not that bad), this is a great location to stay. There are numerous bars and restaurants within walking distance and we paid less than $75 for our room.
This place is conveniently located right off the offramp to I - 235. The upper floors have a magnificent view of downtown Des Moines at night. The pool is spacious, wet and comfy... They have a…
