Now part of Starwood Hotels' Luxury Collection, this San Diego classic was built in 1910 by President Ulysses S. Grant's son. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was closed for much of 2005 undergoing a $52 million renovation faithful to its origins, and it reopened in fall 2006 with its gilt, cut crystal, marble, and mahogany furnishings gleaming. Since that time, the establishment changed its policy so everyone can enjoy the restaurant. In Short More than a few power breakfast, lunch and dinner meetings occur each day at The US Grant hotel's restaurant and lounge. In the evening, theatergoers replace the big-business movers and shakers for an elegant dinner menu of California cuisine including roasted lamb, wild king salmon, and spiced lobster cakes. After 21 painstaking months and a $52 million face-lift, the U.S. Grant Hotel reopened for business in October 2006. Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, directly across from Horton Plaza, the U.S. Grant Hotel originally opened in 1910 — a development in part by the president's son, Ulysses S. Grant Jr. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation purchased the property in 2003 and soon shut ... more

Though the hotel lounge can be crowded during large conventions and evening shows at nearby venues such as Spreckels Theatre and Copley Symphony Hall, seating often is available during early hours after work. Business casual is the standard dress, though shorts and touring threads aren't unusual given the venue.

We stayed two nights over the 4th of July holiday weekend at this hotel. One of the shortcomings of this property was obvious when we pulled up to the curb to check in – the valet parking situation is lousy for this grade of hotel. The interior driveway is closed and since the crew was not prepared for the rush... more

A colleague and I stayed at the US Grant during a conference in May. I convinced my company to put us up there when I realized the deal through my Starwood Preferred membership was better than what we would have gotten at the Marriott on the harbor. The hotel itself is impeccable. Stylish, but not kitchy, opulent but still descreet. Everything about good service and perfect location is true. The room, although may not have been the largest I have seen, was certainly the most pleasant I've stayed in. Design, style, amenities, little touches here and there, it was perfect. I do have a few grudges against... more

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The US Grant. I HIGHLY recommend spending at least one night in this magnificent historic landmark. We were greeted upon arrival by a valet attendant, a bellman and a very nice lady--a manager possibly. They immediately removed items from my hands (i.e. water bottles, papers) that I intended to discard. Our... more

A nice historical hotel that's recently been renovated and updated. It definitely has an old school charm and is beautifully done inside. The rooms are a bit small and it can be a little loud at night because it is right in downtown across from Horton Plaza. Overall a very nice hotel though.

First of all, the Grant is a beautiful, grand old hotel on a par with the Beverly Wilshire and the Peninsula in Los Angeles, and the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins in San Francisco. Service was excellent, as one should expect. Rooms were beautiful; bedding was top-drawer and fixtures were of the highest quality. The recent $50,000,000 renovation, however, had one... more
