Help us make it rightIt doesn't get any better. I've seen many tailors over the years and Ghost Tailor takes the cake. Given any challenge - re-working vintage suits, rebuilding time-worn favorites - this shop consistently finds expert, elegant and imaginative solutions, no mater how many times I believed it couldn't be done. Rare in NYC, the owner listens, she cares and brings a genuine sense of craftsmanship and...
My experience with Jean (Ghost Tailor) couldn't have been better. I had three of my father's vintage suits altered...all were perfect when I picked them up last week. She had even repaired a delicate lining in a jacket that I had forgotten to tell her was damaged. Jean is professional and definitely has the magic touch. Working with her was a pleasure.
Pros
+ Professional, fun to work...
I found Ghost Tailor to be unreliable, manipulative and greatly overpriced. NOT RECOMMENDED! I used her once and will never again. She spent an hour with me at first talking as if we were great friends. Then made a big show of saying how it was going to be so very complicated to take in this dress of mine, and because I was going to wear it to a wedding, I think she took that as an opportunity...
I have taken all of my alterations and repairs to Jean for years. Not only does she do small things like repairs but she also gives me great ideas for other clothing designs. We always have fun and she seems to really enjoy what she does.
Pros
+ Does a great job, fun.

I have to say that Ghost Tailor is an incredibly well kept secret in NY. Jean has a mix of male and female clients (which surprised me simply because she's very well known for her wedding dress designs) and she also has a major celebrity client base. I've seen her work on many red carpet photos in US Weekly, magazine photo spreads, etc. and I always smile and say to myself "that's my tailor"....
I had been a few tmes before for alterations with little incident. But when I called to try to bring some clothes in for an alteration recently I couldnt get the initial words out of my mouth before I was interrupted and tersely told, "Im booked for a week, sorry". So...
1.) The ghost tailor's attiutde is poor
2.) Apparently, she cant be relied upon for anything near prompt service

Let me say that for me to travel into Manhattan for any reason, a place must be superb. I have bought clothes that merely fit ok and watched the magic happen as Ghost Tailor has altered and made clothing look like it cost several times what I paid for it. I watched my figure be transformed by the alchemy of the alterations Jean makes. Fashion is a chore for me and a litany of body flaws appear...
I have been to tailors all over New York and Los Angeles and have learned that a lot of people have no idea what they're doing. After some of the "improvements," I've had to throw away clothes that were so mangled they wouldn't fit any human body. When I found Jean at Ghost Tailor a couple of years ago, I was overjoyed. Among the thing she's done: corrected a top designer's "made-to-measure"...
Let me start off by saying I never write reviews. That said, I'm making an exception for Ghost Tailor.
Ghost Tailor is one of those NY secrets, like a good dentist, a great hairdresser, or the fact that you can get on the LIRR at Hunterspoint and get a seat on the train to Montauk before it gets jammed at Jamaica Station, that true New Yorkers know about and tend to keep to themselves. ...
Understand. I am crazy. I had an idea of a dress for my wedding that was not so wedding-y and I had no idea how to represent it. I met with GT and drew a poor sketch of what was in my head. Somehow she understood what I was getting at and she sent me a' lookin in the fabric district -- which is much more fun than standing in the buff in a dressing room waiting a big fluffy gown to be thrown on...
Even thought the primary business of Ghost Tailor is creating women's dresses Jean was willing to hem a few pair of pants for me. The work is perfect, I look great and I recommend Ghost Tailor to all.
Pros
+ Friendly, quality work
Jean has been one of my favorite clients for years. As a hairstylist/actress, her unique sense of fashion really appeals to me. When I went to her shop, I fell in love with all her creations. She is definitely the go-to person for custom bridal, event gowns. But she is also keenly aware of the working woman's wardrobe, and her tailoring is superb! When (and if) I ever get married, she is the...
While many attempts to a tailor can be uncomfortable and intimidating, a trip to Ghost Tailor is exactly the opposite! I left here feeling confident and wonderful because of Jean. She is so friendly, talented and interesting!!
I had a frrumpy bridesmaid dress that she made unbelievably flattering--all the other bridesmaids were envious!!! Even minus her obvious tailoring skills, she...
Jean altered all 3 dresses for my wedding and did a fabulous job! She also was great in guiding me as to when NOT to alter things that I became a bit OCD about...thank goodness she steered me in the right direction I realize now. I'd definitely go back to her with any other quality alterations I would need done.
Pros
+ Fast, helpful opinions
I've tried a lot of tailors/seamstresses and Jean is the best. She's come up with creative solutions for tough problems, and I trust her with all my 30 and 40-year-old vintage dresses. She works fast and is always charming and polite. If she's with a customer, it is true that she might have to call someone back, per another reviewer. She doesn't have a large staff working for her!

I called to ask a question about tailoring my prada dress. The only thing the girl on the phone said, "Ask really quick or I'm going to have to call you back." I don't have time to wait for a callback. If they're not nice then they don't deserve my business. I'm sure I can find a better tailor who also treats their customers with respect.
Cons
- not helpful
