Ghirardelli Square is a chocolate-loving
tourist's dream. The cluster of shops and fine
restaurants at the west end of Fisherman's Wharf
is named after Domenico "Domingo" Ghirardelli,
who took his confectionery skills from Italy to
Uruguay and finally -- in the mid-1800s -- to San
Francisco. Today ... more

In Short A former chocolate factory that was renovated in the '60s, Ghirardelli Square is considered by some as the first major example of post-modern adaptive re-use. This loosely structured collection of 19th-century factory and mill buildings spilling down Russian Hill to the shoreline now houses some clever shops and restaurants mostly frequented by tourists, but even locals can find ... more

This former chocolate factory is one of the city's quaintest shopping malls and most popular landmarks. It dates from 1864, when it served as a factory making Civil War uniforms, but it's best known as the former chocolate and spice factory of Domingo Ghirardelli (say "Gear-a-deli"). A clock tower, an exact replica of the one at France's Château de Blois, crowns the complex. Inside the tower, on the ... more

This National Historic Landmark property dates from 1864, when it served as a factory making Civil War uniforms, but it's best known as the former chocolate and spice factory of Domingo Ghirardelli (pronounced "Gear-a-deli"), who purchased it in 1984. The factory has since been converted into an unimpressive three-level mall containing 34-plus stores and 11 dining establishments. Scheduled street ... more

What a great place!!! What more could you ask for Chocolate all around you. They have a wonderful selection and you can even watch them make the concoctions. We took our Girl Scout Troop up to Bridge to Cadettes and walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and literally while planning the itinerary this was the major stop for us. It was wonderful that it is so close to Fisherman's Wharf but I have a feeling ... more

Typical tourist trap, but one you should try out. Chocolate is great, some fun stors, but this visit it appeared that there were more empty spaces than usual. My favorite fountain is in the square, and its an easy walk from Fisherman's Wharf and the cable car turn around.

My daddy is a chocoholic and for birthdays and holidays this is where I shop for him. It's a nice mall with different little shops that you will not find anywhere else in the world. One of the rare beauties of San Francisco. I LOVE IT

Ghirardelli is famous in SF for its chocolate, and the store is enough to make anyone drool. The prices are INSANE, but I guess that's the cost for good quality. Free samples are rare sadly, but the tiny chocolates (milk chocolate, dark chocolate, whiet chocolate, chocolate w/ caramel) can be pretty cheap if you just want a tiny sample to tide over a chocolate craving.

Ghirardelli Square is a nice small shopping center located close to the Wharf and the cable car turning station. It is one of the "Must" if you visit San Francisco. There are many very unique stores and restaurants. They have life music outside and nice places to sit. The whole place is very clean and well kept. There is parking in a garage very close by.

Beware of the parking garage at Ghirardelli Square. They will claim you have been there all day and then tell you they have no alternative but to charge you the maximum parking fee!

You have got to visit this renovated 1800's chocolate factory. Included in the mix of stores are some of San Francisco's best restaurants of which I would recommend any one of them. While you are walking through all of the wonderful shops, make sure to catch one of the regular historic tours.
