Editorial reviews from the web (1)

Asian-inspired dining with a bit of Country Buffet thrown in; this cheerful, funky-fun, do-it-yourself stir fry joint is perfect for a first or fiftieth date. Flat Top is comparable to the popular Mongolian Barbeque (but better, and less chain-y); you fill your bowl with your favorite 'fixins' and chill out (hopefully while sipping on something) as the chef cooks up your concoction on,...

Food is great - buffet is definitely the way to go! (Add the flatbread...it's really good!) The flavored lemonades are really tasty too.

Change of pace meal before a show

I've been to 'build your own' stir fry places, but most have a fast food feel. This is a great corner place to hang out and have great food. The choices and options are better, too.

Good bread!

Delicious food and fun atmosphere! Create your own stir fry and watch your food cooked beside the rest of your friends.

Great place if you love stir fry! Just be careful with what you put in your food...

Go for brunch- get there towards the end of breakfast, have a delicious pancake, waffle or omelet, then let them flip to lunch and go for round two with noodles or rice- it's awesome!

good breakfast for a change of pace

Great vegetarian option.

I love Flat Top Grill. I feel healthy and full when I eat here. I can put anything I want into my dinner and season it just as I like it. The price is good, the food can be what ever I choose. Service is always attentive.

Fresh food that you pick out and someone cooks for you! Great lunch place.

Fun food at great prices. Avoid if you don't like to make decisions

Tasty, healthy (well, stir-fried healthy) multitude of combinations. Made up a pad thai bowl with pho-(as in phoney vegan chicken) real chicken and peanuts. Two sauces and some bread. Fun place to eat. The more people you have -- family or friends. Seems complicated at first, but really quite simple. Antonio, our waiter, talked us through it and then was...

We visit the Lakeview area of Chicago quite often and always search out new restaurants to try......and there are so many to chose from!! We went here for breakfast and were amazed at the unique ordering system and how great the food tasted. It is a combination of buffet and cook to order omelettes. You choose the items to go...

Great place to meet friends

I always have friends go there when thy come from out of town! And this place never disappoints! The waitress's here are very friendly. Good food and good service = win!

So good!

Very good! Love how you can customize to what you want. Love it!

Grear restaurant,they rock! Excellent service.

I love Mongolian BBQ and decided to try this place when i was in chicago a few years ago and was instantally hooked.
The choices of sauce is really good. They have this great sausage on the dinner bar and the flat top bread you can get with it is amazing. And the price is really reasonable.

Do it one self style you control your choice and how it is presented. In a bar,a grill, time of day noise leavels.fairly fresh but not much selection. All you can eat.no special frills.medeum size but family welcome.

It's kinda cool to build your own brunch or dinner.

It's too hard to be creative and get the taste right if you don't use their pre-determined combinations. My spouse was so funny when we ate there by saying "I have to cook my own food and still have to pay THEM!"

AWESOME food - of course it is - you create the combinations YOU want!

Great food

Good stuff, but you walk out over-stuffed and smaelling like the grilled food.

Not sure why, but I love going to Flat Top.

The concept here is good, you pick your veggies and meats and they stir fry it. Unfortunately the CFO is running the kitchen here. The meats are sold if they are fresh or not, and are often not fresh. The pork is almost always off colored and they will mix the fresh and not-so-fresh together. The same with the red meat. We stopped going there after our whole office got sick one day at lunch.

I like all the Flat Top Grills, but this one least of them.

Fantastic Concept...SO Delicious

Huge fan of Flat Top. The food is delicious, and the bread is out of this world. One thing I noticed however is your clothes smell like cooking oil once you leave, and I wouldn’t recommend this as a first date type of place since in essence it’s a buffet. The qualinty of sauces is abundant, however I was a little confused on which combinations to select. Luckily there is a chalk board with...

If you don't feel like picking rice, noodles, veggies, meat, and sauces you can order from the menu. Once you fill your bowl up you give it to the chef and you watch them cook it. If you don't like what you made just go back up and keep trying. Totally worth the $13 bucks!

Make your own stir-fry

Get a bowl, choose your rice and/or noodles (there's 2-3 types of each,) then pile on your veggies, of which there are about 30. From there you pick your sauces, of which there are ALSO about 30. Bear in mind that some are good for low fat, low carb, allergies, combinations for certain tastes, and it is all written up on a giant chalkboard behind the counter if you need help. From there,...

Breakfast: Okay food, horrific service

a huge disappointment. the place was half-empty, but we waited 15 minutes for a table. service was appallingly bad. never got coffee refills, never got tabasco/ketchup for our eggs, had to walk across the restaurant to get our own forks. really, stunningly bad. food was nothing special at all. if you're into sweet pancakes, go for the variety. otherwise, the eggs and scrambles are the same as...

I went here with some friends on halloween. I was really excited to finally try this place. Its like mongolian bbq and I really love mongolian bbq. There are so many ways to prepare your food that I was kinda overwhelmed. My friends had told me that there wasn't a wrong way to do it so I decided to be brave and make my own concoction. Bad idea. I was very disappointed with my creation. I wish I would have tried one of the suggestions they give you I probably would have been much happier.

Pros

+ lots of choices

Cons

- stick to their recipes until you get the hang of it

Fun experience and we loved that they had gluten-free options, but the food did run on the overly salty side

While the food is fine (if you like to work for dinner) the service here is always poor. I've had wine spilled on me (without apology), lost food and burnt food. The waitresses are undertrained and the hostess not so bright.

Sharpen up your skills

This is a fun place to go and sharpen up your stir fry skills. Well, you don't really get to actually stir fry yourself, but you do get to put the stuff together. You pick from a whole buffet of vegetables, meats, and sauces, then leave you...

Do-It-Yourself Asian

This is a fabulous place to go on a date, or on a group outing. The food here is great, because you decide what and how much goes into your bowl. Beware of not having a reservation on a Friday or Saturday night at any of the locations. Waits for a table may exceed an hour. My favorite part? Watching the cooks. That's entertainment.
