Phoenicia Specialty Foods

This is one of my favorite places in Houston. There are so many delicious, reasonably-priced, gourmet finds at Phoenicia. Their dry herbs and spices are reasonably priced too. Friendly staff. Very helpful.

Along with Specialty Foods, there is also mice in the store

Case 1.

After shopping at the store one day last year and were waiting at the check out counter with my husband, I saw something run really fast from one place to another. It looked like a mouse, but I was not 100% sure. As regular customers, we were there again last month with my husband and this time he saw the mouse run over around the olive section.

Case 2.

As I was a regular customer, I had bought cheese last month that had an expiration date of 12/08/08 from Phoenicia Specialty Foods. I bought it thinking that I have time to use it before the expiration date. But, I was disappointed to see that the cheese which I kept in the refrigerator the whole time started to rotten. Today is 11/09/08. This cheese is supposed to be good for another month! After taking the cheese back to the store and explained this problem to the manager, the manager did not want to acknowledge that it is a producer/store problem. Instead, they were trying to blame me that I caused it to go bad. They were no where close even to try to understand the problem and solve it. They immediately began to blame me.

I purchase products looking at their expiration date. I was told their return policy for perishable foods is 7 days. Then, somebody should be responsible for the expiration date; which means, if a product goes bad before the expiration date even after storing it as recommended, somebody has to be held responsible for it. Since most of the products are brought from abroad, the store should be held accountable for selling these products.

No offense to anyone, but I have found similar problems in other Middle Eastern and Greek stores here in the States. In fact, they will blame anything, anyone, but never themselves. I am sure there are good Middle Eastern/Greek stores that follow their expiration dates of their products and respect their customers, but not Phoenicia.

Therefore, I will never go to this store again.
