This is one of my favorite places in Houston. There are so many delicious, reasonably-priced, gourmet finds at Phoenicia. Their dry herbs and spices are reasonably priced too. Friendly staff. Very helpful.
After shopping at the store one day last year and were waiting at the check out counter with my husband, I saw something run really fast from one place to another. It looked like a mouse, but I was not 100% sure. As regular customers, we were there again last month with my husband and this time he saw the mouse run over around the olive section.
As I was a regular customer, I had bought cheese last month that had an expiration date of 12/08/08 from Phoenicia Specialty Foods. I bought it thinking that I have time to use it before the expiration date. But, I was disappointed to see that the cheese which I kept in the refrigerator the whole time started to rotten. Since most of the products are brought from abroad, the store should be held accountable for selling these products.
No offense to anyone, but I have found similar problems in other Middle Eastern and Greek stores here in the States. In fact, they will blame anything, anyone, but never themselves. I am sure there are good Middle Eastern/Greek stores that follow their expiration dates of their products and respect their customers, but not Phoenicia.
Therefore, I will never go to this store again.
Phoenicia Specialty Foods carries an abundance of European and Middle Eastern specialty items. You will find the finest spices, cooking oils and garnishes from the Middle East. It also carries almost every variation of Greek olive. Customers familiar with Eastern Europe will recognize the smells emanating from the finest Polish sausages and Hungarian paprika. Canned fish and caviar are...
