ITS REALLY, REALLY BAD!
This past Saturday, I visited Phoenicia for the first time. I was one of about 50 guests who went there to celebrate a friend's birthday. I was told by the hostess to arrive no later than 7 p.m., which is the time when food would begin being served. At 7:40 p.m., the servers finally began placing small dishes containing appetizers, atop each table. The appetizers consisted of generic dishes which you can find at almost any Middle Eastern restaurant. The flavor was typical and in some cases, insipid. Though there were 11 people seated at our table, each dish held only enough food to feed 2 to 3 people. After the appetizers were eaten, the empty dishes and silverware lay strewn about the table for the next 60 minutes. A server finally arrived and picked these up.
At about 9 p.m., one of the guests asked what entree was going to be served. The reply was, "Shish kabob. It will be out in a few minutes." At $43.00 per person, I expect something more than shish kabob. How about creating an experience which reveals something new about the culture's cuisine.
At 9 p.m., I asked a waiter when the entree was going to be served. He mumbled something incoherant and walked away, towards the kitchen. A few minutes later he reappeared, looked in my direction, but walked off to the other side of the restaurant. Evidently, the staff is ignorant of what constitutes good service.
At 9:40 p.m., I handed one of the other guests $86.00 paying for my meal and that of my companion. What we got for $86.00 was a taste of only a few cold, generic appetizers though we had a lot of exposure to shoddy service. I should explain that on Saturdays, the restaurant charges $43 per person which includes listening to a band who I was told, begin playing at 9 p.m. (though during my visit the band was not playing at 9 p.m.) and a show which begins at 10 p.m. and according to varied reports, lasts for only a few minutes. The show consists of belly dancing, yet another original offering by the owners of Phoenicia.
I suggest a person research other Middle Eastern restaurants in Glendale and Hollywood. I have eaten at several finer eateries than Phoenicia. If you are looking for good food in Glendale, irrelevant of culture, there is Damon's whose specialties are steaks, Clancy's which offers a variety of good seafood, BJ's, and the new Cheesecake Factory. Evidently, the owner of the Phoenicia lacks the understanding that patrons place a high value on good service as well as good food. Like a poorly designed cocktail dress, Phoenicia is showy with no real substance and in the end leaves you asking, "What were they thinking?"
Unfortunately, Talin and Angelina believe their opinion dictates what others must believe and feel. Their biased opinions are possibly based on the fact that Angelina chose to invite people (at their expense) to a restaurant whose offerings fail to justify the $43.00 price tag. She also failed to do her homework (so what's new) and research the restaurant before forcing some of us to take part in what proved to be a highly unpleasant dining experience. However, my opinion of Phoenicia reflects my point of view based on my experience. I suggest a person research other websites where viewers have posted their experience at Phoenicia. You may discover that there are numerous complaints citing terrible service and food. Its unfortunate that Angelina and Talin do not have the awareness that others are entitled to express their opinions. At least I have now learned that Talin is the "Queen of everyday, generic, run-of-the-mill, common, not so special, over-priced Middle Eastern cuisine." The review was about the food and service and not an attempt to rain on any person's parade nor intended to critique the "party," an otherwise obvious fact which certain people seem unable to understand. Talin, next time ask me if I have eaten Middle Eastern food before inaccurately asserting that I never had and thus my opinion is invalid. As for the 2 guests who were displeased by the service and the food, they did not make this fact known to the servers though the owner was apprised of their dissatisfaction before leaving the restaurant. Comprehension is not your forte, is it Talin? I guess ignorance is as ignorance does.
