Philippe The Original is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California. Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the "French Dipped Sandwich."

Since 1918, this place has been serving the best French-dipped sandwiches in the world. That seems logical because it was the original Philippe who claims to have invented the juicy concoction nearly 100 years ago. The prices haven't changed that much sincea roast beef, pork, turkey, ham or leg of lamb sandwich satiate your palate and suit your pocket! Want a cup of coffee? Got a dime? No kidding.

Legend has it that Philippe’s originated the French dip sandwich in 1908, a happy accident created by a French roll dropped in a drippings-filled roasting pan. Whether this is fact or urban legend, Philippe’s signature French dips – available with beef, pork, lamb, ham or roasted turkey – are truly special. At its present location since 1951, Philippe’s is rarely without a crowd. A favorite... more

The sinus-clearing hot mustard gives Philippe's French-dipped sandwiches their powerful, distinctive flavor. If you want to add a culinary punch to any meal, you can buy this combustible condiment by the jar at the restaurant.

In Short For more than a century, this landmark eatery has been serving Angelenos the original French dip sandwich. Situated between Dodger Stadium and Union Station, this cavernous spot is decorated with baseball and train motifs, long tables for communal dining and sawdust on the floor. There's standard deli fare--soups, sandwiches, salads, plus a slew of pies--but everyone knows... more

Talk about beef! Two O.G.'s claim to be L.A.'s O.G.-est French Dippas. You set trippas! Dank, noir oldie with baseball/railroad nostalgia and sand-dusted floor. The Original is a screw you to Cole's PE Buffet, a rival dip-setter with just-as-ancient claims to the neighborhood. Legend from 1908: preparing a beef sandwich for a cop, Philippe dropped the roll into pan drippings. The cop... more

Good old-fashioned value is what this legendary landmark cafeteria is all about. Popular with both South Central project residents and Beverly Hills elite, Philippe's unspectacular dining room with sawdust floors is one of the few places in L.A. where everyone can get along. Philippe's claims to have invented the French-dipped sandwich at this location in 1908; it remains the most popular menu... more

If you're looking for an amazing, cheap French Dip, Philippe's is the place. The originator of the French Dip (yes, you heard me right), Philippe's is perfect right before a Dodger game! But get there early, as the lines can get REALLY long before Dodger Games!

Pros

+ Great Food, cheap prices

Cons

- Long lines before a Dodger game

I believe this is the only place that serves french-dip sandwiches. Good lamb sandwich but it does not taste lamby. Cole slaw is good, too.

The cons: the service is inconsistent--sometimes good and sometimes bad. And the brownies--yech! Totally skip it!

Pros

+ Good lamb sandwich and parking

Cons

- Service and brownies

Breakfast is good. Lunch is good. so is dinner.

Gets a bit crowded and the prices are immune to the economy but all in all, its a great place to get a good french dip that won't break the bank, and to get a good slice of chocolate cream pie.

Don't smell the mustard, just dab a bit on and take a bite. If you inhale it, you'll not only clear out your sinuses but you might end up clearing out... more
