Worst petstore ever!! Puppy mill so sad

The store is absolutely filthy, over priced and simply disgusting. They have a gross, dark room in the back that has animal crates stacked on top of each other, filled with sad, pathetic looking cats and dogs in a hot, stuffy room. In front they have a large parrot cage with a macaw, mini macaw and african grey, all together in a dirty cage with no food and the african grey had a bloody cut on his head. The staff is even worse then the condition of the store. They only seem to care about making money, don't care at all about the animals and have no info on any of them. They are rude and uneducated and overall just miserable. This place should be SHUT DOWN!

Bird Boarding Alert !

RE: Bird Boarding:

The Owner is not proactive but defensive. Your bird will be crammed into a small "break room for employees" with a large window overlooking an alley - meaning noise, police activity, firecrackers, etc. No responsibility is taken and there are no measures to keep the birds quiet and calm at night. The room is cramped, but on arrival the staff makes you feel your bird will be safe (albeit in a room with cats, rabbits, anything) in extremely cramped quarters with a large picture window letting every noise and light in - imaginable. Picure police activity, every possible light and noise entering a window that has no window treatment and is kept exposed over the alley to freak your bird out.

I talked with the owner after a trauma (a month later, so I could let my emotions sink in and become logical) about my bird, and she couldn't look me in the eye. Buy seed here, but don't risk the life of your bird here while you are out of town. It is not worth it - the owner is not trying to improve the situation, she blames you, the bird mom, for not requesting that the bird be covered up. Once you read what happened to my bird you will see that you don't want to board your bird here.... Read on:

My bird and two other birds had what Pets Of Wilshire referred to as "night terrors," near July 4th, because of, most likely, the big single paned window over-looking a busy alley they share with KooKooRoo. I was never called while in Arizona, and my precious bird was not treated. Thank God I was only gone for two nights and when I returned to be told by an employee that a total of three birds had suffered "night terrors," I saw bood on my bird's claw trailing down from her mid-wing feathers and (of course) immediately took her to VCA on Wilshire for medical treatment. I was never called in Arizona, (of course they had my phone number). Mind you, I would do everything to keep my bird happy & healthy. I signed over my consent for them to take my bird to her Veterinarian which is less than a mile up the street (VCA on Wilshire). I felt her safety was in good hands. When I picked up my bird there was blood. Blood on her - and blood on the staff person who was cutting (for me, to keep her balanced), her last two remaining flying feathers. I immediately took her to VCA on Wilshire after seeing the blood. (VCA on Wilshire is a hospital I recommend and trust completely) and my bird spent 4 hours in VCA in an incubator getting attention from the Avian Veterinarian. She had lost all of her flying feathers, and spent a week on anti-biotics and pain killers.

The owner of Pets Of Wilshire is in denial and she has no intention of making crucial improvements (i.e., a bigger space with less exposure to the window) thus putting in place a plan for keeping your bird safe. She seems to just want to get your money as she boards every conceivable pet next to your bird (cats, rabbits, it's a free for all). Be aware - be very aware.

Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover

The people who own and operate the shop may be nice. Their puppies are cute but here's the cold facts I learned with a little bit of internet sleuthing.
The hybrid pups they currently have from Bloomington CA are from two "breeders" that also sell on-line and in local websites. They also have listings in Arizona so I'm not really sure where the puppies are raised. They have many, different hybrid toys. Most definitely are a puppy mill because they won't allow buyers to see the breeding dogs or the puppies with their mothers. A big warning sign that these dogs are raised in unpleasant conditions or perhaps out of state. I know these are the same puppies as Pets of Wishire are selling because they have the same photos (ie back ground ) of them on their for sale adds as Pets of Wilshire. But get this they are selling cookapoos for $250-$510
and the same dogs are listed (again same photos) for $1,400. at Pets of Wilshire. Now lets talk about the French Bull Dog pups one of which (the fawn) looks very sick at Wilshire Pets. I managed to track down that "breeder" too and found photos on her web site for English and French Bull dogs that again were the same photos with the same flowered background as the ones on Pets of Wilshire's site. Now she has a ton of puppies for sale but no mention of their parents or photos of their parents. That is probably because she is getting crates of puppies shipped from a foreign country. According to the ASPCA web site. She's probably buying her pups for around $600 each (bull dogs must be born cesarean) on her web site the pups from Pets on Wilshire's litters were listed for $1,200-1,400. Pets on Wishire has priced them at $3,000 each. These two Frenchies are truely a sad little pair. I work near this pet store. I'm a documentary film maker. On my lunch hour I often visit these little guys thats why I wanted to learn more about their stories. They are so cute so friendly and their story is indeed a very sad one. Do not buy animals from this pet store or any for that matter. It encourages a despicable industry.

Don't buy puppys at a petstore

Petstores get their puppies from PUPPYMILLS the worse cruelty ever! Please people do your research, Los Angeles Times reported on April 13th & the 20th about petstores selling sick dogs because they come from inhumane conditions. Go to the shelter or rescue group don't contribute to the misery of these poor dogs breeding in wire cages stacked outside or in barns with numbers tatooed on their ears and their vocal cords cut. Please adopt and save a life.

Don't do it, every dollar spent makes it worse

I used to frequent Pets of Wilshire as a child but when I grew up and learned about animal welfare and the atrocities of puppy mills they lost me for good. I returned as an adult when I saw they're new location, hoping they'd updated their philosophy to match their modern new digs, but the live animal situation was even worse at the new store. All those great new products & modern diets, engulfed in the repulsiveness of those animals stunted lives, what a wasted investment.

I'm no rescue nut, I equally respect shelters dogs AND the beautiful purebreds out of responsible quality...
