Paru's

only indian food I enjoy outside

I'm an Indian-food snob. I grew up eating home-cooked South Indian food and as the vast majority of Indian restaurants are actually North Indian food, I'm always disapointed by the bland flavors and un-inspired dishes. I've been going to Paru's since I was a kid, though and in spite of the not-great area of Sunset that it's on, the food, service and atmosphere is why this place has been around for decades. Fresh dosas to order, uppamma (my favorite) and a mulligatawny soup that is almost like the rasam my grandmother makes from scratch.

Pathetic service coupled by rude attitude. We were 2 families and ordered 2-3 dishes. Most dished very pretty blend, asif they just boiled it and brought it in front of us except for Gobhi Allo, which looked decent in taste. However, potato pieces were way undercooked. I've tried it a couple of times and found it to be on the greasy side. The food didn't seem as fresh and flavorful as other Indian Restaurants. Not good enough quality for me to go back.

I work very close to this restaurant and have always wanted to give it a try. So I ordered take out one day. The staff was very friendly and warm. While I waited for my food the host brought me a cup of chai and we chatted a bit about my husband's culture (since he is also Indian) and his.
