The space formerly known as Park Avenue Cafe now has a seasonal theme and changes name accordingly with the season. No matter; Park Avenue offers a unique menu of innovative American cuisine, a welcoming and informed service team, and an outstanding wine list.
After eight years I returned. Same seat at the counter. Same vibe. Almost same
menu. Attentive service. Huge hamburger...with those great pickles and relish.
Huge serving of fries. Great ice tea. A funny policeman getting his coffee.
Customers stuffing. Its still a great down to earth spot, one of the last in NYC.
Large US style portions but no real substance. My chicken caeser salad ($15.25) was a big bowl of chopped lettuce, dry croutons and packet Parmesan with a huge, sliced chicken fillet on top and, as requested, dressing on the side. The chicken was ok while hot but soon cooled to dry tastelessness and the thick dressing, almost mauve in colour,...
Totally unimpressed by the food in this establishment. Ate their for convenience but in hindsight wish we hadn't, much better food available at much cheaper prices elsewhere.
It looks like a NY deli, however this one may be the worst. Food looks like trashed from the kitchen. It was crowded but that's no excuse. I found service quite ok, but the food is below average. Avoid this one.
FYI - The Park Cafe is closed. NO restaurant exists any longer in the Park Central Hotel. Please make this adjustment. There were several other restaurants in the area. The restaurant's clever construction by design firm AvroKO let the owners transform the space within a matter of days.
The wine list reflects the time of year too, with custom blends made for the restaurant by different producers like Hedges Family Estate.
Reserve the kitchen table, which sits right in the middle of its namesake, for a full view of the action and a seven-course tasting menu. Don't worry, clear soundproofing, controllable temperature and a special chef's menu keep the experience cushy. Call four to six weeks in advance to secure the space for up to 10 guests ($150 per person).
