Ortolan

Romantic Restaurant & Bar

Review Rating
Ortolan is a really special restaurant, primarily known for the tasting menus prepared by the chef, Christophe Eme. (It's not uncommon to see him when you are leaving.) Ortolan is famous for its vials of fruit and vegetable emulsions, which they pass out in a test tube-like rack as an appetizer. Most holidays tend to have their own pre-fixe meals with accompanying wine flights. Although the meals are expensive, you more than get what you paid for when you filter in the romantic surroundings, amazing food and nearly feudal service. There is a lounge/bar in the back of the restaurant next to a wall covered with potted cooking herbs; the dining area is modern and bright, but there is a bricked in dark section that looks like an old European mansion's dining room. Since Ortolan is on 3rd Street, you should definitely use their valets unless you enjoy long walks.

Ortolan, residing on L.A.’s West Third Street corridor, is the first venture for French Chef Christophe Emé who has worked in some of the most recognizable restaurants in the world. With the encouragement of his girlfriend, actress Jeri Ryan, Emé decided it was time to open his own restaurant. Designed by Kristopher Keith and his firm, Spacecraft, Ortolan has a decidedly modernized provincial... more

Chef/owner Christophe Emé brings glamour to the plate and the dining room; this is special-occasion French dining at its most extravagant. Pass through the deep cobalt arch at the entrance, and enter a world of crystal chandeliers, pintucked cream leather, and walls padded in shirred champagne fabric. The bar/lounge in the rear of the restaurant boasts a wall of potted herbs under a domed... more

Unrecognizable as Linq, this foodie mecca successfully blends progressive and elegant design concepts. A dark-blue Moorish patio gives way to the cream-colored dining room, with low-hanging ornate chandeliers. In the back, a greenhouse lounge features rows of potted herbs on walls and a roaring fireplace. Waiters in pressed white shirts and teal ties provide professional service; sommelier... more

The private table in the lounge accommodates up to 12, and can be reserved for special occasions. For a more unusual experience, sit at the long communal table in the raised front room.

Recalls the restaurant Monica Bellucci and her French hubby, The Merovingian, dined at in Matrix Reloaded . A similar crowd can be seen here on certain on nights. Named after a small bird that's been savored to near extinction by French gourmands (and now an outlawed delicacy), this wonderful new restaurant is a partnership between former L'Orangerie chef Christophe Emé and Jeri Ryan, the stunning Boston Public actress. We have been hitting the food scene in LA for many years now and were thrilled to find the exuctive chef from L'Orangerie, Christophe Eme, had opened his own gem on 3rd street. The staff aresuperb-French service without being pretentious or overly intrusive. The amuse bouche of soup and eggplant caviar were lovely and a great way to kick off the meal. On our first visit, we went with the 10... more

I've been to Ortolan several times over the last two years and it never disappoints. My dining companions and I always go for one of the tasting menus (6 or 9 course) which are delightful haute cuisine and we usually do the wine pairings too. The menu changes seasonally but the mainstays are always somewhere to be found: some wonderful variation on foie gras as well as chef Eme's soft cooked... more

I have been to the finest restaurants in France and...This place was awful - We went to Ortolan when it first opened, was nice- We ate there a month ago and it had changed- The menu hasn't changed one bit in 2 years but, the staff and the attitude has. The waiters don't speak English well and can't explain the complex dishes- The portions are so small as to be obscene- The cheese plate includes... more
