In 1850, Brooklyn Township changed its name to Nunda. The nearby Village of Nunda, now a part of Crystal Lake, was the first train connection to Chicago, making it the hub of McHenry County.Sandwiched between McHenry and Crystal Lake, 48-square-mile Nunda Township is one of the largest townships in McHenry County. The population sits at just over 35,000.
