Business Description from the Web

Highland Street runs along the edge of the University of Memphis, but it is no cutesy strip of boutiques and pizza places. And Newby's is not a haven for wealthy, preppy kids, either. It has a feeling of reality, with a heady mix of people and music. Local bands play here almost nightly on one of the two stages. There is no telling what you might hear—it could be folk or alternative rock—but it... more

Bands play daily, but if it's "bar side," you're more likely to hear local acts. "Band side," the larger space next door, is reserved for big-name jam bands like Widespread Panic and others.

Editorial Reviews from the web

Tiki lights, billiards and mounted moose only add to the fun at this crowded college hangout, a favorite since 1975.

The Scene
An energetic, barely legal crowd packs the two rooms and patio of this U of M favorite.
Guys and gals on the prowl fill dimly lit coves while high-fives ring out where cue sticks hang. A tiki-like canopy, lights and all, stands tall over a well-stocked bar. From the front patio, you can watch the hustle and bustle of Highland Avenue. Nights start slow but get packed well... more

Located close to the University of Memphis, this cavernous club is a popular college hangout with two stages -- one large, one small. There's live rock, mostly by local and regional acts, most nights of the week. Funk and alternative rock have been pretty popular here of late.

Newby's is a pretty popular place for live music, and especially jam band regulars.

It's a thriving place for the college kids, and there is a separate room from the bar for the music.

Big space, can fit lots of people, and there's always a good party atmosphere.

We drove 350 miles to attend a concert at Newby's in Memphis. It wasn't quite what I had expected from the web site, but it was still a nice place. The food was really good. The bands play in a seperate, connected theater. It is a really neat atmosphere.
