New Shanghai Restaurant Review

After original chef C. K. Sau departed for the suburbs, this beloved Shanghainese spot saw some dark days. Since then, it has been acquired by the folks who run Allston’s Shanghai Gate and it seems to be back on track with two chefs at the kitchen’s helm. As with virtually any Chinatown eatery, don’t expect amenities and don’t expect to be mollycoddled; if you want to get to the good stuff,...

I ate here several months ago and loved it. Fast service and the courteous waitstaff. I would recommend ordering things that are not "american style" This place is authentic Sichuan, but is inappropriately named "New Shanghai" which is a completely different style of Chinese food. Convenient location too. I walked here for lunch after visiting my sister in the hospital maternity ward.

Cheap Eats

Group Friendly: New Shanghai is a Chinatown favorite, not for its decor, but for its authenticity as a go to for hot, spicy Szechuan-style cuisine. Prices are reasonable, starting with appetizers under $10 and entrees in the high teens. The fish is fresh, meats are well seasoned and the dim sum is to die for. But be forewarned, you will find a sampling of unusual Chinese treats like Szechuan...
