Classic Hollywood restaurant

Been there since 1919, this restaurant is a throwback to the past. The dishes like salad chiffonade and welsh rarebit are a blast from the past. Superlative tomato soup and creamed spinach. I recommend the sand dabs, crab, macaroni 'n' cheese, and flannel cakes (for breakfast). Sit at Manny's station at the counter and he'll do magic tricks for you. The waiters have all been here forever and are consummate professionals. Did I mention the perfect martinis? Also a spot for celeb sighting. I saw David Bowie here. (Edited March 21, 2007)

"Old Hollywood is alive and well" at this "charming" former literary haunt – Hollywood's oldest restaurant – where "miraculous martinis" and "simple", "well-executed" American standards are still "served by waiters in red jackets"; dark booths, wood-paneled walls and murals of English hunting scenes add to "the feeling that the ghosts of Raymond Chandler and Charlie Chaplin are not very far" away.

Musso & Frank Grill Restaurant Review

You're in Raymond Chandler territory at Musso & Frank Grill. In fact, the famed detective fiction author was just one of many celebrity patrons, and he even mentioned the restaurant in his novel "The Big Sleep." This Hollywood landmark originally opened in 1919, though it moved next door into its current digs in 1934. The dining room has a clubby look and feel, with white tablecloths and red...

A survey of Hollywood restaurants that leaves out Musso and Frank is like a study of Las Vegas singers that fails to mention Wayne Newton. As Hollywood's oldest eatery (since 1919), Musso and Frank is the paragon of Old Hollywood grillrooms. This is where Faulkner and Hemingway drank during their screenwriting days and where Orson Welles used to hold court. The restaurant is still known for its...

Hollywood history infuses every red leather booth and surly waiter at this old-time steak house. Catering to all walks of celebrity life since 1919, it still packs in locals. Some criticize the old-fashioned food, but it's well worth the visit if you follow these rules: (1) Brave the fluorescent glare of the bar for a predinner martini—still the best in Los Angeles; (2) Ask to sit in the...

We decided to go here on recommendation from out tour book and it did not disappoint. We had not made a reservation so were unable to have a table but were able to have a seat in front of where the chef was cooking.

Musso & Frank has been around since around 1919. It is a taste of old Hollywood. I have been there a few times and it is an enjoyable experience. Good steaks, nice drinks and fun atmosphere.

Absolutely loved this place!! Be aware it is quite pricey but worth every penny. Our meal for two with a bottle of wine came to just under $250 but it was our last night after a fantastic holiday in California. I do recommend the steak,...

The service at this restaurant was abhorrent. The restaurant was recommended by a couple of people and the food was pretty good. One of our four meals was first delivered incorrectly and then corrected but delivered after the rest of us were finished and THEN...

Business description (8) view all

Welcome to The Musso & Frank Grill where we provide an authentic Old Hollywood dining experience one would have received in the early decades of last century. We welcome you to Old Hollywood!

Open since 1919, this restaurant was long the bastion of Hollywood industry power-dining. With the look and feel of a private men's club, it rose to fame in the Golden years of Hollywood.

You're in Raymond Chandler territory at this clubby Hollywood landmark, famed for its bar, brusque service and old-fashioned menu.

Musso's is the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. Opened in 1919 by entrepreneur Frank Toulet, who joined forces with Oregon restaurateur Joseph Musso and brilliant French chef Jean Rue, the restaurant quickly became known for outstanding service and culinary excellence.

Tips about this business (6) view all

Where to Sit: Ask for a seat at the counter, it's one of the best places in town for those eating alone. Or copy Raymond Chandler, he's rumored to have penned the better part of "The Big Sleep" from one of the high-backed red booths.

The Extras: Watch the bartenders for a forgotten lesson in mixing. Contrary to Mr. Bond, the classic martini must be stirred, and not shaken. Shaking is only appropriate for cocktails that have heavy juices or cream in them.

Parking: If the pay lot behind the restaurant is full, note the free parking hiding in plain sight in the public structure around the corner north on Cherokee.
