Classic Hollywood restaurant

Review Rating
Been there since 1919, this restaurant is a throwback to the past. The dishes like salad chiffonade and welsh rarebit are a blast from the past. Superlative tomato soup and creamed spinach. I recommend the sand dabs, crab, macaroni 'n' cheese, and flannel cakes (for breakfast). Sit at Manny's station at the counter and he'll do magic tricks for you. The waiters have all been here forever and are consummate professionals. Did I mention the perfect martinis? Also a spot for celeb sighting. I saw David Bowie here.

As Hollywood's oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank Grill takes diners back to the days of Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, both of whom used to eat there. One steps inside from the boulevard into a dimly lit dining room that's undergone very few changes since opening in 1919. People come to get a taste of Old Hollywood along with American and Continental fare. The red leather booths, dark mahogany ... more

This is Raymond Chandler territory. A Hollywood landmark since 1919, this place has the old-time feel to which many a newcomer aspires. More than just a Hollywood landmark, Musso's is a can't-miss spot for a romantic date, especially if you ask for the small booth in the west room (compared to the more open-air east room). Low lighting, wood paneling, snug seating and the house's award-winning martinis ... more

Liver and onions, lamb chops, goulash, shrimp Louis salad, gruff waiters -- you'll find all the old favorites here in Hollywood's oldest restaurant. A film-industry hangout since it opened in 1919, Musso & Frank still welcomes the working studio set to its maroon faux-leather booths. Great breakfasts are served all day, but the kitchen's famous "flannel cakes" (pancakes) are served only until 3 PM ... more

Tips About This Business

Where to Sit

brought to you by

Citysearch

Ask for a seat at the counter, it's one of the best places in town for those eating alone. Or copy Raymond Chandler, he's rumored to have penned the better part of "The Big Sleep" from one of the high-backed red booths.

Parking

Citysearch

If the pay lot behind the restaurant is full, note the free parking hiding in plain sight in the public structure around the corner north on Cherokee.

The Extras

Watch the bartenders for a forgotten lesson in mixing. Contrary to Mr. Bond, the classic martini must be stirred, and not shaken. Shaking is only appropriate for cocktails that have heavy juices or cream in them.

The Scene Inside Hollywood's oldest restaurant, the wood-and-lead-glass bar awaits. Drenched in soft amber light and staffed entirely by grizzled pros in red jackets, this famed establishment is the last bastion of the city's Golden Age. Dark mahogany booths with high sides keep conversations private. Unpretentious and old-fashioned, the sharp-tongued waiters know when they're wanted.

A survey of Hollywood restaurants that leaves out Musso & Frank is like a study of Las Vegas singers that fails to mention Wayne Newton. As Hollywood's oldest eatery (since 1919), Musso & Frank is the paragon of Old Hollywood grillrooms. This is where Faulkner and Hemingway drank during their screenwriting days and where Orson Welles used to hold court. The restaurant is still known for its bone-dry ... more

Thick, rare filet mignon, bloody on the inside, slightly charred on the outside paired with a gin martini and a long legged blonde. If this is your idea of a good time, Musso and Frank's is the place for you. They do it well. Raymond Chandler and Orson Welles.

Pair a good steak with a lemon martini, and feel like a movie star. This place is classic, and the waiters are true professionals.
