This inn that was once a sea captain’s house is located on picturesque City Island in the Bronx, just 20 minutes north of Manhattan. The charming spot owned by a French chef provides a soothing, French-country atmosphere for guests. Discounted rates are offered during the week, and a two-night minimum stay is required on weekends. Enjoy the views of the water as you sip an excellent wine and... more

City Island may be part of the Bronx, but Le Refuge Inn is not the place to sport your Yankees garb. Carefully dressed diners—many celebrating birthdays and anniversaries—find their way from all over the metro area to this French restaurant and B&B. It's set in a porticoed, 1876-vintage Victorian home whose dainty gold and ivory parlor is now a primly curtained main dining room; more robust... more

Downtown outpost of pioneering upscale Chinese franchise.

In Short Long before ritzy Asian eateries became all the rage, this mini-franchise from restaurateur, art collector and actor Michael Chow ("Rush Hour 2," anyone?) attracted celebs and the folks who stalk them. His latest Tribeca outpost looks like a funhouse designed by penguins, with black-and-white lacquer, glass panels and chains hanging over diner's heads. Dishes like scallion... more

The Scene In the mid-1990s, chef Pierre Saint-Denis purchased a 19th-century Victorian manor on historic City Island. This mile-and-a-half of land is buttressed by lighthouses and surrounded by Long Island Sound. Once home to a sea captain, the mansion has been turned into the kind of cozy, antique-laden inn you might stumble across in the French countryside. Saint-Denis named it Le... more

Every few decades, culinary survivor Michael Chow hooks up NYC with another celebrity magnet. No matter what the year, the vibe always manages to remain distinctly 1986. What up, Mary Boone! The Tribeca version hits midtown's same high notes (and high prices), with sleek design and less-than-revolutionary Chinese food. Just remember to get the Peking duck and that menus are for amateurs and... more

I'm still kind of speechless. Mr. Chow's in Tribeca is... it's... I don't really have words for it.

Wait. Yes I do. Foul. Inedible. A joke. Rancid. A cosmic ripoff.

Are you kidding me?

This place is designed - it actually REVELS in - ripping off tourists and tasteless human beings. From the moment they tricked us into ordering $10 bottles of bottled water to the last disgusting bites of... more

Overpriced for "Chinese" food

I came for restaurant week, because I heard good things and it looked like such a trendy restaurant. The food was OK, not the best. For about 1/10th the price you can get portions 3 or 4 times the size that tastes a lot better in Chinatown.

Pros

+ Well-decorated, fancy, decent service

Cons

- Costs too much, food kinda bland
