Despite its well deserved reputation, the crowd at The Mint is always receptive to newcomers and first-timers. The Mint is a full service bar with a large selection of domestic and imported draught beers. For the nondrinker, The Mint has a selection of nonalcoholic beers, and a full line of soft-drinks. In Short This shotgun-style bar on the edge of the Castro draws mixed, but gay-leaning, crowds who have been flocking here since its 1993 karaoke makeover. Timid singers investing in a few tasty hurricanes sit inconspicuously along the bar stools, stage-right, while the "American Idol" wannabes grab tables in front of stage-left and clamor among each other for what to sing next.

Camera pans in: Potbellied man onstage singing “Summer Lovin’,” basset hound licking up spilled drink from overzealous bar hug, 301-page songbook with words to “The Rose.” Close up on sign: The Mint. Like we need to tell you. Karaoke lounge keeps Friskies behind the cash register. Why? No idea. Do as the locals do. Drink too much, pick cheeseball tune, belt it out. There an American Idol inside... more

This is a gay and lesbian karaoke bar -- sprinkled with a heavy dash of straight folks on weekends -- where you can sing show tunes every night. Along with song, you'll encounter a mixed 20- to 40-something crowd that combines cocktails with do-it-yourself cabaret. Want to eat and listen at the same time? Feel free to bring in the Japanese food from the attached restaurant. Sashimi goes for... more

I've been going to The Mint for a long time and have figured out how to have fun. I even KJ'd at the Mint a few times on early weekend days when it wasn't too crowded, so I know how it feels to be one of them. Follow these guidelines and you're golden.

(1) Give the KJ a tip when you go up to give him/her your song slip. This is actually customary in any karaoke bar. The quicker you want... more

Had a BD party there with a bunch of girlfriends- all of us karaoke virgins. Had a blast. Decent drinks and really friendly crew and clientle who seemed to know each other. Strong drinks helped to loosen the inhibitions. By end of the night we were all grabbing the mic and doing group numbers.
