in regards to Mr. Bosworth's complaint, he had a new muffler and tailpipe installed on his S-10 pickup, he did fail for a serpentine belt having excessive cracks, which is part of the NC State Inspection, if the belt breaks, you will lose your power steering, which is a safety issue. I brought my truck in for an inspection knowing I had an exhaust leak. They estimated around $100 to repair it. When I returned I was told the price was $283.45, even though they replaced only the 1' tail pipe (the small pipe at the very end). The piece cost $46 but the labor to attach the piece was over $200.
