Don't waste your time going to McAfee Ski and Sport

Unfortunately no stars or half a star is not an option. Don't waste your time renting from McAfee Ski Shop. I've rented my son and daughter's equipment from there for the past 11 years, adding up to over $200 every year, in addition I bought my skis, bindings and very expensive custom fitted boots from them, and every Fall my family and I attend their annual tent sale leaving hundreds of dollars there for new ski clothing and upgrading my son's snowboard boots every year to the tune of over $150. My point is that I have literally spent thousands of dollars at McAfee Ski and Sport through the years. I also know the owners personally as I've been friends with Gary Hayes since my days at Vernon Valley Great Gorge and Action Park back in the 1980's and 90's. Apparently none of that matters as this is a business and is run like a business and one that does not care much for not only servicing their customers but who also alienate locals like me that frequent their ski shop, spending hundreds of dollars there, year after year.

Every year when it becomes time to re-rent my daughter's skis I bring the boots and skis back every November and swap them out for longer skis and larger boots since my daughter is 12 years old and her feet grow every year and she gets taller every year. I bring them back in November, so that we get new boots just prior to the start of the new ski season, because her feet grow so quickly. When I do this I usually just roll over the original deposit of $120 which I originally placed years ago. This year I decided to finally buy my daughter new skis and boots because when renting from Mcafee last November the boots she received were old, warn and no other way to describe them but disgusting, but she made do throughout the season, and the skis we rented last year were all cracked along the top edges with very sharp fiberglass splinters that destroyed her gloves when she carried them to the slopes. After pricing the new skis and boots at McAfee and another local shop we decided to go with another shop that offered to sell us a beautiful set of slightly used skis and rented us a pair of brand new ski boots for less than half the price of McAfee's smelly, disgusting rental boots.

After buying the skis and renting the boots from the other local shop I brought my daughter's last year's rentals back to McAfee and expected to get my $120 deposit back. The kid at the rental counter said that they had a policy of not returning customers' rental deposits and the only thing that he could do is give me store credit. I just bought my daughter's skis at another shop and didn't need $120 of McAfee store credit when I can purchase the same stuff just down the road for much less and in most cases better quality. So I decided to turn to the owner Tracy Hayes who was working the front register and who I've known for years and who's husband I have been friends with for over 20 years. In an instant in front of my son and daughter Tracy became extremely belligerent and just downright nasty, and insisted that store credit was their policy. I attempted to talk to her, not only as the shop owner but as a friend and a local who has frequented her business for many years and who has spent thousands of dollars at her business. She only grew in her bad attitude and belligerence towards me and my son and daughter and asked if I purchased my daughter's new skis from her. When I said I went elsewhere she became even nastier. Eventually after some back and forth bickering she said that she would meet me half way and give me half my deposit back or $60 as a credit on the credit card that I originally used to rent last November and just less than half of my original deposit or $57 back as a store credit. Not wanting to make more of a scene in front of my son and daughter, and being totally aggravated that my past 11 years of being a faithful customer meant absolutely nothing to Tracy I reluctantly agreed to take her offer and walked out with less than half of my original rental deposit.

Bottom line is, don't go to McAfee Ski and Sport, that is unless you want to get legally robbed of your hard earned money and raise your blood pressure and aggravation.
