Martinique Bistro Restaurant Review: Reflecting the legacy of its founding French-Caribbean chef-owner, Hubert Sandot, who established the restaurant in 1994, Martinique Bistro is one of the city’s real finds. Bright paint, Italian wall sconces and well-worn wood define the décor. Current owner Cristiano Raffignone is of Italian descent but was reared in Paris. Chef Eric LaBouchère works in a...
One of the great "finds" in New Orleans, Martinique reflects the legacy of its founding chef-owner, Hubert Sandot, of French and Caribbean heritage, who established the restaurant in 1994. Current owner Cristiano Raffignone is of Italian…
This place is just far enough uptown to be off the regular tourist radar. Because it has only 44 seats when the romantic, jasmine-scented courtyard is not open (100 with), make reservations. It's a sweet little bistro, a local favorite, turning out bright, lovely French/Mediterranean-influenced dishes like sautéed escargot in a Roquefort gratiné, and light-handed scallops with pea shoots and...
Martinique's name is the legacy of its founding chef-owner, a man of French and Caribbean heritage. But current chef Kevin Reese is now king of this relaxing little restaurant couched among the shops and eateries of upper Magazine Street. While the occasional undercooked vegetable can be a turnoff, freshness suffuses everything. Salads tend towards entrée-size, which was fortunate when a party...
The Scene
This Magazine Street cottage might be the most unassuming, unsung bistro in the city. The tiny indoor space creates an intimate French cafe vibe, while the spacious patio offers...
I had been to Martinique before, years ago. I thought their Revillion Menu was a great opportunity to revisit the location. Unfortunately the food was very uneven. The entrée was salty, the soup was not as listed, everything was solidly "just okay" except the service which was poor. Our waitress acted put upon to serve us, as though it was a bother. However while our table was clearly neglected...
My wife and I really appreciate the consistency of this place. The offerings are ambitious without overreaching and plate quality is very consistent. The indoor atmosphere is very well designed with lots of natural wood look without being noisy. The courtyard is of course classically lovely. Service is attentive without being intrusive. On this visit we enjoyed a shrimp dish with a saffron...
Their seemed to be some major changes to the menu. I liked the old one much better.
Our server neglected to tell us that one of the few items on the menu was not available. Frustrating, since 3 of the 4 diners wanted that dish. Then also neglected to tell us of a special not on the menu. So better communication needed! She was apologetic and nice, but still........ This was a brunch meal.
I and several acquaintances feel that Martinique is finally heading in the right direction--- and consistently. The chefs seem dedicated to and appreciative of what's fresh and local, with an emphasis (I hope) on what swims in the Gulf. The staff has been precise and friendly. My belief is the manager (Abe) has made it all come together. Hats off!

Enchanted by it's beauty and coziness, Cristiano Raffignone born in Paris, France and raised in Italy, purchased Martinique Bistro in October 2003. He kept the name in remembrance of the tropical feel that the dine-in courtyard and view gives the place. Hubert Sandot opened Martinique Bistro in 1994. The chef was born in Madagascar to a French mother and a Martiniquais father; he was raised in...
