Mader's has been voted the most famous German restaurant in North America. Some years ago, in 1902 to be exact, things weren't quite the same. An ambitious young German immigrant, Charles Mader, poured his life savings into a speculative venture: he purchased a small building on 233 W. Water Street (now Plankington Avenue) and hung out his sign. "The Comfort," it read, was comfortable, with... more

Since 1902, Mader's has offered the folks of Milwaukee wonderful traditional German food. The menu features all the specialties – schnitzels, sauerbraten with gingersnap sauce, a near-legendary pork shank, Hungarian goulash, brats, and more. Meat lovers will be in their element! There's even a sampler platter for the indecisive. Accompaniments include sauerkraut, spaetzel, dumplings, red... more

It's named after the Mader family, not after a German mama. Diners here get the ultimate old-world experience, from the Hummels that occupy niches in the entryway to the dark-wood paneled walls. And of course, you'll dine on rich German favorites; weiner schnitzel, sauerbraten, and spaetzle reign. AE, D, MC, V.

The Scene Generations of the Mader family have been dishing up platters of Old-World pleasure since 1902. A visit here is like a visit back to historic Bavaria; stained glass, rich woodwork and medieval weapons and suits of armor contribute to the restaurant's authentic ambience. Germany's greatest culinary hits are mainstays on the menu. The Food The liver... more

I lived in Germany and Switzerland for six years while with IBM and dined at numerous fine restaurants entertaining guests throughout Europe. Mader's cuisine is authentic, marvelous and consistent. I currently live in Mequon, WI and dine at Mader's perhaps 15-20 times per year. I've probably dined there over 100 times. I'd say in 100+ visits I've had 2-3 slightly below average experiences. I... more

My family ate at Mader's Restaurant on Thanksgiving this year and despite it being one of their busiest days of the year the service and food could not be surpassed. We were delighted with the exceptional staff and their attentiveness and discretion at clearing empty plates, filling empty water glasses and assisting with any concern that came up. They were awesome in watching the patrons and... more

Historically disappointing

Tonight wasn't our first visit to Mader's - we had been for lunch previously and been generally pleased. Friday evening dinner was most disappointing. The waitress treated us as if we were an inconvenience. The chichken schnitzel was like the sole of a shoe and the whole experience was at best, boring. The beer offering is phenonmenal, but hardly redemptive. We won't go back.
