M Cafe de Chaya

Normally I am Carniverous, but...

M Cafe de Chaya has a a great selection of tasty vegetarian, vegan and macrobiotic food. There are some fish dishes, great desserts, but the sandwiches and side salads are the star here (my favorites are the kale with peanut sauce, the sesame noodles and the tuscan sandwich with carmelized onions, hummus and soy sausage.) Everything is really fresh and there is a variety of healthy sweets, tea and coffee, too. Warning: it's a total scene and you should be prepared to hunt for parking and be crammed up next to the adjacent diners, so don't expect a quiet, intimate time.

Tasty raw-ish food

Nice tasty vegan-ish food (I don't think everything is vegan, but a lot of what they had is).

Whatever cake we had for desert was super tasty. Sweet, but not too sweet. Chocolate-ish, but not too heavy. Perfect to finish off a nice light lunch. Mmmnnn.

Great sandwiches that include a veggie version of a New Orleans muffaleta. They also have one of the best veggie burgers in town. I also enjoys their peanut kale side salad. Great for the random celeb sighting.

The juxtaposition couldn't be more delicious: Around the corner from the perennially mobbed Pink's, where hot dogs come slathered in fluorescent chili, is a jewel box of a cafe serving macrobiotic food to the health-obsessed. The fare at M Café de Chaya is so full of color and flavor that the adjective that comes to mind is vivid. To go along with the clean-living cuisine, the atmosphere is... more

If you're the type that likes food with integrity, this quick fix of macrobiotic cuisine is the virtual Chinese medicine of chow town, appeasing vegetarian appetites along with the occasional guilty conscience. At M, the rice used in sushi is organic brown instead of white. And you won't miss out on proteins -- they come as seitan instead of meat. Once you enter the spotless, modern setting,... more

I have been hearing of M Cafe de Chaya for a couple years now, and finally made it out there for lunch last week. I loved it. A part of the Chaya VeniceBrasserie group, this is their macrobiotic outpost. Macrobiotics is a diet consisting of whole, natural, seasonal foods. No refined sugar, dairy or meat. Seafood is the only animal protein in the diet. At the cafe, you may dine in, or take... more

Thankfully, I discovered this wonderful establishment a few years ago while hungry and scouting for food on a Saturday afternoon. Upon entering, I discovered a wonderful layout of colorful looking fresh foods set in simple white plates in a long display case that stretched the width of the café. Inside, the seating consists of small round tables with French bistro wicker chairs and a long... more

The food is so fresh and so healthy without being boring, flavorless, or ordinary in any way. I love the salad sampler plate because it's too hard to choose just one dish, and you get more food than you can manage! It's true though that this place gets pretty packed, so it's often hard to find a table during peak hours...maybe go either early or late.

I would rate M. Cafe 4 1/2 stars. I've eaten at both the Melrose Ave. and Culver City locations, and found the food to be consistent and equally tasty in both locations.
Probably my favorite thing to eat at M. Cafe is dessert -- the chocolate sacher torte to be specific. It's very chocolatey and has a fresh raspberry filling. Other foods I have enjoyed at M. Cafe include all three of the... more
