The LA Opera has lavish productions of many wonderful and classic operas. Placidio has really nurtured the opera and they are doing some amazing things. The Opera is still very traditional and has not done anything cutting edge like the Phil, but it is still a beautiful cultural experiance. The Dorothy CHandler is a beautiful place. Parking is $8. I've seen Der Rosenkavelier and Pagliacci in the 2005 season of the Los Angeles Opera and I loved it. There are supertitles above the stage so anybody can translate the dialogue to English, whether from German to Italian.
