Loaf & Ladle

There are three components to this down-to-earth place's success: quality, price, and location. The name refers to homemade bread (more than 30 kinds) and soup (100 varieties are offered on a rotating basis). Choose a chunk of anadama bread, made with cornmeal and molasses, to go with your soup, and take your meal to one of the two decks that hover over the Exeter River. It's simple and homey.

It was fun place and we visited many times with various results. Tomato soup was wonderful and the breads yummy.

This place has been closed down months ago. It will probably be demolished by the new out of State owner. It was never a restaurant that I would frequent anyway. It was always rather grubby looking and not at all attractive.

I loved the place and the folks who ran it.
The kids who worked there were always amusing.
I suspect there is more to the story than they just decided to close.
It was an Exeter landmark.

Located in the historic district of Exeter, the Loaf and Ladle has been providing its services to the community since 1974. It is a small restaurant with award-winning taste. It specializes in homemade soups, sandwiches and quiche. It also has homemade breads, baked goods and a salad bar. Eat indoors, or out on the deck overlooking the Exeter River.
