The Levi Coffin House was owned by one of the leading members of the underground railroad movement in the 1830's and on. An excellent docent-led tour is provided for a very modest fee. The house is very impressive--both physically and in the history that took place there. The structure is much more substantial and ornate than I would have expected...

While the house itself is small, it symbolizes an important time in our history. The tour, lasting approximately an hour, provided details of both the family and insight of what life was like for the runaway slaves striving to get to Canada. The docent was enthusiastic and knowledgable, which made the stop both enjoyable and informative.

The informed and passionate volunteer docent at this museum provided a sobering walk through the sad history of slavery In the U.S. Her inclusion of facts about the personal life of Levi and Katherine Coffin as well as a glimpse into Quaker values brought history to life.
