Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant

Don't let the black bars on the windows scare you!

Have you always wanted to eat w/your fingers? Now you can be adventurous and daring all in one place. And you don't even need a bungy rope. The Ethiopians sure know how to treat a guest. The food is delicious, filling, and unique. When you come here please don't ask for a fork! They will bring you this special, flat sponge bread that you will pinch off and use to grip your food with. Get a little bit of everything and they will bring it served on a huge round tray with large portions of everything you ordered spread on top of one large piece of their flat bread, and make sure you eat that too when your done. It will have soaked up the spices and become a special treat all in itself. No meal is complete here w/out a tall, cold glass of their thick mango juice. The food is spicey but not intolerable. I have eaten everything on their menu, and believe me, you can't go wrong. Lots of spicey lentil dishes, spicey beef dishes and yummy collard or mustard greens, I can't remember which. Their saffron potatoes and cabbage are very mild and super tasty! I am getting hungry for Ethiopian food! I would go for lunch because this food will be the only meal you will need to eat all day long!

This modest, stylish Ethiopian spot serves groaning platters of bean, vegetable and meat entrees. Tasty, cheap. No silverware: grab your food with pieces of injera, a tart, spongy bread. Try the tej, a honey wine.

Overall: Good, will try again with larger group. Only a party of two, so we ordered small. The appetizer sambosas were good. Oily, but tasty beef filling. Main dishes were lentils in a brown sauce. This reminded me of baked beans, but in a good way. Comforting and simple. Second dish was a spicy lamb with hot(?) peppers and onions in a hot oil sauce. Injera was good and there was plenty! I... more

I moved from Seattle to CA a year and a half ago and always make a point of eating at Lalibela on trips back. I used to try other Ethiopian restaurants in the city but now i don't even bother. Lalibela is the best. The tastes of the various dishes are complex, subtle, and extremely pleasing. Event the leftovers are wonderful; just roll up whatever is left (mixed up is OK) in the leftover injera... more

I like coming to Lalibela. We have been going for many years, we take our kid and eat until we are stuffed for very cheap. The ambiance may leave something to be desired for some but for me it is very friendly and easy going.
