When Julia Child needed a baker for her television show on master chefs, she went to La Brea Bakery's Nancy Silverton. You can find many of these breads in almost every supermarket in town, but if you're in the neighborhood, stop by where it all began (located in the building that once housed Charlie Chaplin's studios). The tiny shop has daily sandwich specials and will do special orders with...

The pain rustique is crusty and flavorful; the country-white sourdough is great for sandwiches; and the baguettes are magnificent. I paid $4.25 for a very dry almond crossant and the Caffe Latte I ordered was barely lukewarm. Almost $8 for this? I'll stick to The Coffee Bean. There's also no parking on La Brea anywhere near this place during rush hour unless you valet your car. OVERRATED!!!
