Out of business :(

Unfortunately Kyo-Fu had gone out of business before we could try it out. I'm writing this review to save people the drive and the heartbreak :)

Great Nonsushi Japanese food

It's true, the okonomyaki is wonderful, and a nice change from sushi. Friendly, cordial staff, relaxed and casual dining area.

Kind service, traditional spirit and great food

Kyo-fu was such a relief to find after all the Japanese restaurants in Portland featuring sushi, sushi and guess what? Sushi. Okonomiyaki is one of the most creative and loved Japanese dishes around, and the fact that Kyo-fu offers it was such a pleasant surprise! Kyo-fu is run by a spirited, kind Japanese man who does a great job of handling and managing a restaurant mostly by himself. That's the type of heart more restaurants need, instead of a large, industrial building with a staff of 50. Kyo-fu is a cute, quiet place and their chicken katsu is wonderful by the way!!!

japanese soul food - okonomi yaki

i was so happy to find this place, which doesn't market teriyaki chicken and sushi as their main menu. okonomiyaki looks like a thick pancake with a similar concept as tacos. you can add whatever you wish to a flour mix and fry it in a frying pan. smother it with brown sauce mixed in with mayo before you eat. so easy and so good! unfortunately, last couple of times i visited, they were out of some ingredients and the chef wasn't too flexible to modify menu even though there were only 6 customers in the restaurant. try out this restaurant with an adventurous attitude; the appertizers are not...

Kyo Fu Me!

We love Kyo Fu so much that we go once a week, sometimes twice. The owner, Taizo, is wonderful and he is an okonomiyaki god! Order an appetizer like the tofu-yaki, or gyoza then sit back, sip your tea, and wait for your masterpiece to arrive. Be patient, this kind of perfection takes time. Kyo Fu is perfect for small groups. The tables seat 4 but you can easliy slide up another chair. The okonomiyakis are big enough to share, so try something else too.
