This busy Hollywood cafe is actually two shops: a little bistro and a coffeehouse next door, where they not only serve spectacular coffee but also roast it on site. In fact, the Probat roaster is right behind the brass counter where the barista pulls the shots and swirls pretty fine latte art. On a street where average coffee shops proliferate, this cafe roasts and serves a noticeably superior cup ... more

Hearty, healthy breakfasts, killer coffee and an international newsstand next door. The young and unshaven congregate here to read the trades, work on their screenplays and/or nurse a hangover. The coffee is among LA's best (and strongest). And the food is above average: There's eggs baked with goat cheese and sweet risotto with dried figs. Breakfast offers such standbys as poached eggs and crumpets, while lunch and dinner vary from ahi tuna with sweet potatoes ... more

Strong, wake ya up first thing in the morning, kinda coffee that packs a whollop. The food is very good but the service is a bit inconsistent. All in all, worth the (up to) 20 minute wait on the weekends for breakfast from wherever you are.

Pros

+ coffee, Coffee, COFFEE

Cons

- inconsistant service

I used to go to this place for breakfast a few years back, but after a few disappointing experiences stopped going. I decided to go back on a whim Sunday and can sadly report that things haven't improved. The first problem was that the service was slow. It was very busy (Sunday morning), and the staff were probably overrun, but it's been that busy every Sunday I've been so can hardly have been a surprise ... more
