I just wanted to say I was shocked to find out that the teen working decided not to serve me. All the signs were on, ice cream still out, door unlocked, an hour before closing, and I was told that they were closed. He told me that they closed "30 minutes ago" when I knew they were still open. What a disappointment! Oh I forgot to mention I drove 5 and a half hours for a vacation, and looked forward for a month in going to Justin's only to be turned away because of a lazy worker.
Justin's makes the best ice cream I have ever tasted. Amidst the Riverwalk's jumble of over-priced T-shirt shops and mediocre Mexican restaurants, Justin's offers an awesome product made locally--not by money-hungry corporations that tap the tourist market dry with little considerationn given to product quality. The young, friendly staff at Justin's also impressed me. The owner obviously makes an effort to hire fun, diverse people. The long-haired kid who served me, David was his name, spent an hour telling me first about the history of Italian gelato, and second about the philosphies of...
President Clinton declared the mango-flavored ice cream to be a national treasure and had it served at both of his inaugurations. Elvis would have loved the chili caramel and sweet onion flavors. Justin's own favorite is the caramel apple. He also makes ice cream from local or regional in-season fruits, including Poteet strawberries and Fredricksburg peaches.
