Joey's has no non-smoking section and the bar smoke tends to waft into the restaurant.
Appetizers don't give enough bang for the buck. Ask for a second loaf of bread and more dipping sauce instead.
The house wines are excellent and reasonably priced, with some interesting variations beyond the usual choices of red or white.

In the day where everything is changing to the chain restaurants with the Mc Foods, I will go out of my way for authentic food. This is the one Italian Restaurants that I think is worth it. True food, great atmosphere, and a little Frank and Dean playing in the background. Located in an out of the way place on the lower East Side.
I have been to Joey's many times & have enjoyed it every time until a recent thursday I went there. My friend & I walked in and it was so smoke filled, that it should have told us that it wasn't a good night to come in. There wasn't anyone in the dining room, so my friend and I chose a table. It took us 2 1/2 hours to eat a wonderful dinner and the waitress didn't pester us a bit. We went because we had heard that the atmosphere was right for a long, conversation filled dinner.
Service was adequate. I would not go there at dinner time if I were in a hurry, but we weren't. The food was well worth the moderate price. We truly enjoyed both the dinner and the atmosphere.
