Outstanding Cafe and Gourmet Food

Review Rating
Joans on Third is not only a gourmet food store, but it is a great cafe and caterer. There is a long shelf filled with European olive oils, sweets, crackers and condiments. Joans makes their own desserts and side salads, which you can eat on the premises or take with you. You can also get a sandwich or some fresh macaroni and cheese. There is a counter filled with imported cheese and meats, too. Joans is the perfect place to have a coffee and relax but you can also fill up a picnic basket and take off on your own. Seating is a little tight on weekends, when people go shopping on 3rd street, but Joans has a few spaces in the back of the store.

What I miss about living in San Francisco is all the little specialty food shops where I could quickly dart in for a few slices of prosciutto or bresaola, for the tin of imported tuna in olive oil that I need to make an old Piedmontese recipe for stuffed peppers, for packaged amaretti cookies to crush for tortelli with pumpkin stuffing. Now that interesting stretch of 3rd Street between La Cienega ... more

In Short After years as a beloved, bustling boite, this marketplace/cafe combination has doubled in size. Sunny white walls surround tiled floors and gleaming steel shelves; cozy tables dot the interior and sidewalk patio. Celebs and locals crowd a buzzing deli counter for Mediterranean-inspired sandwiches like brie and ham, and tarragon chicken, in addition to items like salmon cakes and ... more

I visited Joan’s on Third on a Friday around 3-4pm. I found myself a parking spot pretty quickly about two blocks away because I know my way around this area and don’t waste time trying to find a close spot like all the other lazy people who circle around for 30 minutes so they won't have to walk a block or two. I didn’t think it would be busy since I was going at an off time but when i got there ... more

Reminds me of SoHo in NYC, love the hustle and bustle

It's definitely chaotic, but you have to embrace that! The line makes no sense, but whatever! The food is so worth it. I had the best prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich I've had since I moved out here from the East Coast. And the bread they use is so fresh, nutty, and healthy-tasting, yum! Reminiscent of a trendy NYC deli in SoHo, which totally appealed to me. Also, all of the side dishes are so unusual ... more

A lot of annoyances, but in the end the food brings me back again and again

Everyone talks about the lack of parking and seating, the crowded space where you stand to put your order in, and that it's overpriced, but Joan's food is terrific. The pickles can't be beat and you can buy some to go. We always get sandwiches and share the Salad Trio (a selection of three of their daily special salads) to share for $10.25. The Lentil salad is a standout. I can't go to Joan's and ... more

Don't you hate waiting in line for breakfast? Most weekend eateries open by 10 am but that hangover keeps you in bed ‘til 11 am. And of course by then the line for a table is out the door. Joan's on Third is a little different; they take your order at the counter so all you need to do is search for a table... and believe me, it won't take an hour... ten minutes tops. I stumbled upon the deli/ ... more
