best fries in L.A.

They're really not just bragging. A nice atmosphere, with pretty good food.

Every neighborhood needs a James Beach. You can go in and have a luxury meal in the sectioned-off, lily-white dining room or you can hang out in the open-air bar festooned with board shorts and get drunk as a skunk. There’s even a club room upstairs with a reversible pool/air hockey table. The menu is solidly American (think pan-roasted halibut, stuffed pork chops and pot roast). You can also... more

With a menu that's more old-school American than those at most of its peers in now-trendy Venice, this coastal hot spot seems just right for a seaside lunch or supper, inside or out on the patio. The menu focuses on classics like meat loaf, chicken potpie, and fried chicken, but you can also find tuna tartare, ceviche, and scallops with truffle sauce. If you're so inclined, sip your dessert... more

This bright, classic cafe probably started LA's mojito craze; it has been serving them for years. With mid-century modern furniture, a festive patio and more than 25 wines by the glass, James' Beach is an upbeat scene that's almost always jammed. Chef Shari Lynne Robins is no longer on staff, but her elevated comfort-food dishes are still being served: calf's liver with pancetta, beer-batter... more

A Venice Beach haunt that carries on the neighborhood's laid-back, good-time tradition.

In Short Regulars guzzle vodka martinis at the bar, recalling the restaurant's storied '80s past, while the young and beautiful bring the spark of a beach party to the dining room. Neon-lit bathing suits hang from rafters on the quasi-outdoor patio, while soft lighting casts a romantic glow over the more cosmopolitan dining room. Entrees lean toward Americana with a creative twist,... more

Beach bunnies field indecent proposals from barefoot producers. Salt n' pepper longboarders with gold cards also make the scene. Evidence of a late-night neon skinny dip hangs on the patio. Brunch is all about the free scones. Times says best L.A. fries; we say keep searching. Still trendy after all these years for pork chops with grilled peaches, chili grits, and pan-fried sand dabs over Maine... more

This place is interesting, when you walk in you can either go to the left for some fine dining and really good food, or you can go to the right and hang out at the bar in a laid back atmosphere. If you walk upstairs they have one pool table and you have to pu your name on the chalkboard to get a spot. Fun place to go and hang out with friends.

First of all if you are not a celebrity or an old rich dude hitting on wh*re looking girls as old as their daughters, then make sure there is more than two people in your party because they will seat you at one of the worst table! For example, a table in front of the restrooms and next to the kitchen so all the servers are constantly bumping against your chair as they are coming in and out. ... more
