Established in 1877, the Illinois State Museum (ISM) is headquartered in Springfield, and houses a massive collection of natural history artifacts that are deeply insightful of the life, art and music of the people over the centuries. Wonderfully preserved, the awesome exhibits cover fossils, household ware, mining tools, Native American items and even glass paperweights. Admission is free.
