Information about this business (4)

Hotel San José, Austin, Texas. 12K likes. Hotel Resort

For decades, this accommodation was your typical drive-in motel, but it has been transformed into a unique bungalow-style hotel. The hotel itself has an urban minimalist feel with concrete floors and handcrafted furniture. Framed posters of legendary rock and blues acts that form a part of Austin's music history grace the walls of each room. This pet-friendly hotel even occasionally hosts...

The San Jose is located on South Congress Avenue, a few blocks South of where the Colorado River runs through Downtown Austin. Built in 1936 as an "ultramodern motor court," over the years it saw various incarnations as a brothel, a Bible school, and haven for prostitutes, transients and addicts. Liz Lambert bought the hotel in 1995, and ran it in its latter incarnation for 3 years before...

An eternal favorite among tourists and locals alike, the Hotel San José epitomizes Austin cool from the vintage music posters on the walls to the typewriters and Polaroid cameras on hand to help you capture the experience. Room decor is some of the most tasteful around—simple, modern, and tastefully retro with Bertoia side chairs and platform beds. You won't be as pampered as you would at one...

An "alternative to mainstream lodging", this revamped 1930s motor court is now a "cool boutique" in a "crazy-prime" South Congress location ("within walking distance of restaurants and trendy shopping"), offering "comfortable as hell, gorgeously modern" rooms with "minimal furnishings" that "make you feel like an artist waking up"; the "ultrahip" bar has outdoor seating in a "lush courtyard" –...

This quaint-but-hip stand of 1936 bungalows, in the middle of the action on South Congress, was transformed from a derelict motor court into a warren of rooms and suites done up in South Austin chic: a modern, minimalist style adorned with balconies, patios, and tropical vegetation. Rooms have concrete floors, flat-screen TVs, and pine furniture created by a Marfa, Texas, artist. Butterfly...

This revamped 1930s motor court gets a lot of attention from the national press for a design that weds beauty to simplicity. The San José is a good choice for design enthusiasts and hipsters, who enjoy both the nonconformist vibe and the social scene in South Austin. Other travelers may think that the minimalist rooms are overpriced. Even if you don't stay here, you might enjoy coming here in...

This bungalow-style hotel is surrounded with Southwestern landscaping and modern accents. The Shangri-La courtyard is abuzz every evening with clued-in locals who watch enviously as you take a dip in the mini pool. Walk in any direction on South Congress for food and live music. Or pull a Lance Armstrong on one of the rental bikes. Other rental options: music, videos, and a Remington typewriter.

Really liked Austin but not this place! This hotel/motel came recommended so I was really disappointed. It is an old motel that has been nicely renovated into a pretty cool property. Beautiful l...

Austin's South Congress Avenue was developed just for me. Who am I? I am a slightly-stoned, unthreatening millennial. I have a minor-league eye for design, and some disposable income. When I...

Hotel San José is a gorgeous hotel on South Congress that we passed by and wanted to check out.

Upon arrival the staff was friendly and accommodating and we did not have any problem on that end....

We stayed 2 nights here after getting bumped from the South Congress. While we enjoyed our stay, the price of $468 a night for a room was extreme for the accommodations provided. An additional $87...

A magnet for music lovers and arty types, Austin's Hotel San José is a masterclass in stylish understatement with chilled-out charm on South Congress Avenue. This is a mellow hangout with retro bungalows and a leafy courtyard. You can borrow a bicycle, tinker on a typewriter or purloin a Polaroid – the extras here are a study in bohemia.

This urban bungalow-style hotel oozes modern minimalism. The “ultramodern motor court” is hidden in plain view --- smack in the middle of the culturally rich South Congress nightlife --- behind ivy-covered walls. Once inside the granite-pathed and bamboo-shaded courtyard, one can’t help but feel like they’re part of the in crowd. This is where rock stars stay when they’re in town to see other...

Originally built in 1939 as an "ultramodern motor court," the San Jose has since been transformed into a secluded urban bungalow-style hotel in the heart of one of the city's most beloved neighborhoods.

Tips about this business (3)

When to Go

The bar opens in the late afternoon, but the best time to go is at night: The stars glitter above, tiny table-top candles shimmer and the temperature cools, making outdoor drinking more pleasant.

Where to Sit

If there are no more tables available, head for the clearing on the far side of the pool--it's not part of the bar, but the butterfly chairs by the edge of the water make a sublime place to relax and talk.

Save Money

Hotel San Jose is the official motel of the country-music TV show "Austin City Limits," and musicians are more than welcome. Call ahead for band-member discounts.
