The Italian Renaissance-inspired Hotel San Carlos is the only historic hotel still operating in downtown Phoenix. Built in 1928, the smallish rooms don't quite live up to the lobby's Old World elegance. Still, there's a nice rooftop heated swimming pool and sundeck , and all the modern conveniences are available, including wireless Internet service throughout the hotel. Conveniently located in the ... more

In Short Built in 1928, this historic hotel accommodates the conference crowd with old-fashioned charm and Italian-Renaissance decor. Patrons are transported back in time when witnessing the chandeliered lobby and copper elevators. The hotel is also supposedly haunted by the ghost of a woman dressed for dancing who jumped to her death from the rooftop years ago. The in-house barbershop and ... more

If you don't mind staying in downtown Phoenix with the convention crowds, you'll get good value at this historic hotel. Built in 1928 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the San Carlos provides that touch of elegance and charm missing from other downtown choices. Unfortunately, bedrooms are rather small by today's standards, but they were renovated in 2003. If you're up for a splurge ... more

For lovers of boutique-style hotels, this is NOT one that you want to stay at. Though the building's restoration is nice, there are some things to note. Walls are so thin that you can hear your neighbors' conversations as if you were in the room. It was miserable, especially late at night when people are talking in "day-time" voices. I heard another guest mention that it felt like staying at a ... more

From Lokey : I took my wife to Phoenix and made the mistake of staying at this hole. First of all, they did not disclose that we would be listening to construction equipment all night. To make matters worse, there was no hot water in the morning, and had to shower with cold water. I made multiple complaints that night but all fell on deaf ears. They all claimed they could not get in touch with anyone ... more
