It's Spring: Where to Find Fiddlehead Ferns in Chicago

Despite a return to winter temps, a sign that spring is here is the appearance of fiddlehead ferns on Chicago menus. The elusive spring green is a chef favorite that's often harvested in early May, thus many of the restaurants that have them now are among the trendiest and priciest in town. Check out the map to see where fiddleheads are already sprouting in the city.

"Exciting" meat-free dishes impress "even confirmed carnivores" at this Noble Square destination, where Shawn McClain's "upscale", "inventive" small plates make it the "best vegetarian in town"; a "knowledgeable" staff elevates the sage-colored space, and notable cocktails plus "interesting" wines are further enticements.

Fine vegetarian dining. Recommend the black bean mole plantain hash.

Love the creative vegetarian cuisine! It's great to have a local spot with a vegetarian/vegan menu!

We are always underwhelmed by the food when we visit Green Zebra. Two of the four prix fixe menu items were good (not great) and two were subpar. Not worth the price. However, there is a lack of fine dining for vegan options in Chicago, so we end up going about once a year.

We love this restaurant! Our go-to restaurant for date night, birthdays and anniversaries. We are never disappointed, their food is amazing, and the staff is fantastic.

Green Zebra is located at 1460 W Chicago Ave Ste 1 in Chicago and has been in the business of Retail - American Restaurant since 2004.

Restaurants with Healthy Menus: Back in 2004, before the phrase "farm to table" was on every diner's lips, chef Shawn McClain planted the flag for veggies on a rarely trafficked stretch of West Chicago. Now the area, known as Noble Square, is the up-and-coming spot to dine. Thanks to Green Zebra, this rare restaurant helps to give vegetarianism a gourmet boost. This is not your...

Shawn McClain’s moss-colored, minimalist house of Zen is the only upscale dining experience Chicago vegetarians can truly call their own. The menu’s classed-up brunch classics include German-style pancakes with Granny Smith apples and caramelized-banana crêpes with ricotta and Wisconsin honey. Chef de cuisine Jon DuBois’s superseasonal dinner menu is always in rotation.

Specializing in vegan and vegetarian cuisine, the green zebra keeps its guests coming back with a great menu, a warm atmosphere, and an overall vibe that is simply divine. Dishes here include veggie dishes and a few chicken dishes.

Know Before You Go: While the menu is primarily vegetarian, there are some chicken and fish dishes included, though no red meat is served.

Save Money: Reasonably priced smaller portions allow for experimentation: A couple will generally order five to seven dishes between them.
