Genghis Cohen

Name plays on words, but no play with food

Review Rating
The food is good here, but is standard American style Chinese food.

A dependable representation of this American expression of Chinese cuisine. Yummy and a good value. Their cashew chicken is great even if its authenticity is dubious. Good for kids.

Good Food, Better Value

Review Rating
Genghis Cohen has a large selection of tasty Chinese food at affordable prices. Weeknights, there are several 2 item plus rice or vegetables combos that can easily feed 3 or 4 people. I particularly like their Cohen slaw, a spicy pickled cabbage and pickle mixture. They also have a great mixed drinks menu. The decor is restrained, just some booths and tables. Although it is generally packed, I never have to make reservations unless it is on the weekend because there is a live music club in the front room. Although there is a parking lot, it is usually full, but there is some street parking within a block. The service is friendly but sometimes a little slow because it's crowded.

One part Chinese restaurant and one part music venue, Genghis Cohen satisfies a hunger for hip as well as a hunger for food. No, its not a Chinese deli. Contrary to its Chinese/Jewish name, Genghis Cohen bills itself as "New York-style Szechuan Chinese cuisine," which sounds crazy to those who haven't recently visited Old Town Pasadena to hit up "ThaItalian"—yes, thats Thai-Italian fusion, dear... more

In Short As the name implies, this live music venue and restaurant features a Mongolian-Chinese menu that caters to the largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. The '80s-inspired dining room is decorated with etched glass, black-vinyl booths and gray walls. This candlelit space serves as a nice way station before entering the bare-bones theater, where pew-like seating and folk musicians... more

You really wouldn't expect good Chinese food here. There's a bar & a small music venue attached to the restaurant. But once you get the food .... wow... the no name duck is a must have.

Headed down hill with no brakes.......

This place used to be good. Not anymore. It started about two months ago when I went to pick up my staple of Spicy Cliantro Shrimp and the BBQ Pork Loin. I was told on the phone the wait would be 20 minutes, so I showed up at the 30 minute mark. The restaurant was only a quarter full, but my food was not ready. I tried to chat with the older Chinese woman behind the counter, who I know to... more

My wife and I were loyal Genghis fans from '99-'07. We went back in '08 and what a shock! GC used to be wonderful. Creative, fresh, tastebud-popping Chinese cuisine, beautifully presented, served piping hot by a symphony of wait-staff, busboys and owners. But that was then. This time, an anniversary dinner for my inlaws, the place was barely lit (did they forget to pay the bill?). An owner... more
