Lies and steals

Do not trust Matthew Gates- rented our home to him and his family. From the very beginning he bounced his checks- gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't want to put his family out on the street- had not paid rent since June and we still gave him the benefit of the doubt and did not evict him. Finally in November after never fulfilling his promises to make good- we started the eviction process- still not making the Official Notice until after Christmas. He moved his family out and destroyed our house. Trash and garbage everywhere- filled tubs and sinks with water and trash, left food rotting in fridge, damaged carpet s and scratched up hardwood floors, damaged walls and molding- personal used toiletry items on floor in bathroom, garbage and cigarette butts in microwave, burning cigar in closet, broken light fixtures hanging by wires, missing fixtures and smoke detectors, filth everywhere-inside and outside of the house. We were very gracious with this family because they had 3 young children and even though they were hurting us by not paying the rent, we understood the challenges of the economy and that families are going thru a hard time. We gave them chance after chance to get back on their feet and make good- but in return, they not only don't pay-but destroy our home to "thank us" for our graciousness. I just don't understand how people can treat other people that way. His wife Heather will cry a sad tune as well- but she is no better than he is. Watch out for these people because they have no intention of doing the right thing, just how far they can get by using and stealing from other people

Gates is not even a licensed contractor. My experience with him was that of being given lies and excuses after he took a good chunk of my money. He left piles of trash, broken windows, and my home exposed to the elements without any siding for about 8 months. I lost my homeowner's insurance. He avoided phone calls, moved his office, and essentially disappeared after he was not able to put me off. He took my money to pay to finish others' jobs. As I tried to track down his whereabouts and researched online (BBB, coj.net, St. John's county, Florida's DPBR), a clear picture emerged. On a consistent basis, he has failed to complete jobs, pay suppliers, advertisers, and his landlord. Maybe he did finish a job here or there to someone's satisfaction, even liking, but the facts should far outweigh the one or two good reviews out there that were probably posted by Matthew himself or one of his good 'ole boy associates. Please do yourself a favor and find another company! He is a lying sack of sh*t.
