Built in 1929 at the then-astronomical cost of $25 million and modeled on the Washington Monument, the Foshay was the brainchild of plumbing magnate Wilbur Foshay, who went to prison for fraud a year after it was built. The Foshay was the city's crowning glory before the IDS Tower, and even today the opulent art deco lobby is breathtaking in its extravagance.
