A local company wrote me a $500 check on their First Fidelity Bank account.  The bank was around the corner from the business so I decided to stop in an cash the check.  I was informed that the bank charges $5 to cash a check unless the person cashing it is a bank customer.

Try this

This is actually standard practice with just about every bank out there.  $5 is about average, and you will usually see rates in the $2-$10 range.
So try this little experiment.  Go to your bank and ask them how much they charge non-customers to cash a check written on their bank.  Let us know what you find out,  and if they say they won't charge you a fee you should post the bank name here as...
