News \u0026 Observer food critic Greg Cox says: The atmosphere isn't fancy at this Durham bar, and the service can be erratic. So why does the place fill up most nights? Good sandwiches, live music and 12 beers are all on tap at this Bull City hangout.
Editorial Reviews from the web
In Short Offering an upscale bar menu and DJs several nights a week, this Main Street locale is a hipster hangout as well as a good lunch option. Try the puff pastry pizza or the warm artichoke salad. Vegetarians will enjoy the roasted tomato, squash and buffalo mozzarella panini. When the music isn't spinning, catch the game on one of several TVs.

The food was good. I had a some kind of delicious beefy wrap with a side salad. The side salad is one of the best I've ever had at a cheap restaurant. Lightly dressed. no disgusting tomatoes. Both times I've been the salad has been good.

They have a great special menu and serve food very late on the weekends. Not at all what you would expect by peeking in the door. Duck confit with grilled asparagus or risotto at 12am in a smoky bar? I was pleasantly suprised by the food. It can be crowded and smokey but at least it's not Honeys. ow almost forgot good service too most of the time
Pros
+ Great food and good beer selections

The Federal is a great spot for casual dining or having a drink with some friends. The menu is fairly broad, ranging from sandwiches (the ham and cheese is exceptional) to entrees (good steak, fish, etc.) and they have a decent (~10) collection of beers on tap with a focus on local brews. On a warm day, the outside seating fills up quickly, and atmosphere inside is dim and cozy.
