In Short To get to the cozy bar, walk through the door on Congress Avenue and down the stairs. Inside, a well-dressed crowd enjoys the full bar's selection of 20 drafts and long list of wines by the glass against a backdrop of rustic stone walls. Early birds have the best luck snagging the sturdy-looking wooden tables, but there is always room to stand and revel in the sounds from... more

One of the few places where jazz is not dead. Praisers Wynton Marsalis and Down Beat magazine wouldn’t lie. Walk downstairs into the subterranean pub. Grab a booth in the darkness. Order a pint of European pilsner. Pull out your Moleskine and your Space pen. Inhabit your inner Kerouac. The crowd will pay you no mind. Not when a hep cat like Ephraim Owens is huffin’ and puffin’ onstage.

Stars on location in Austin mingle with T-shirted students and well-dressed older aficionados at this intimate downtown venue, as dark and smoky as a jazz bar should be. The focus is on contemporary and traditional jazz, although the bill branches out to rock on occasion.

The Elephant room is legendary as far as Austin goes. They have had some great music come in and out of that place downstair for years. To drown yourself in a stiff martini, listen to someone blowing on a tenor sax and lose yourself in the improvisation is a true experience. Elephant Room....wish I was there.
