Hola ese, no super burritos or spinach tortilla wraps here. But bringing your hooptie way out to this Oakland barrio is worth it. Get the enchiladas de mole or huarache with cactus and carne asada. Living la vida hangover? Sunday’s pot of pozole is the cure-all, as is barbacoa (barbecued lamb) on the weekends. Dare we say the best Oaxacan-style comida in the Bay Area? We dare.
The family that owns El Huarache Azteca is dedicated to corn. Cooks mix
it into masa and pat out thick sopes, grilling them until bits of dark brown
appear. They wrap fresh tortillas around chicken stewed with tomato and onion
and stuff fried cornmeal pouches with pressed, deep-fried pork rind. It even
shows up in champurrados, a sort of viscous hot chocolate made thick with corn
meal.
