Open since 1934, this is the country's oldest drive-in and a national landmark. Nostalgia buffs will be drawn to the orange awning outside and orange vinyl stools and booths inside, not to mention the carhops, some of whom have been here for more than 40 years. Finally, some people see beyond all the ranting and raving. I frankly don't see why Doumar's is as popular as it is. The barbecue is completely bland. There is absolutely NO way they smoke the meat on premises; there is no smoke flavor, no bark--in fact, the meat tastes like it is purchased in bulk from a food service that knows nothing about proper barbecue. NEVER again. Really shoud be less than one star. Because of all the hype, my husband and I sought this place out this past Friday. It was packed but I have no idea why!!!!! Being from North Carolina, I should have know better than order BBQ. Contrary to what the previous reviewer said, the BBQ here is a far from Eastern NC BBQ as the east is from the west. When we moved here all we heard was how great this place was. We went and we were disappointed, the second and third time- same thing. The food isn't bad, but it's not wonderful. It's reputation is great but the food isn't.
