The Mexican fare at this North Beach spot is "as good as anything in the Mission" declare fans of its "authentic flavors" and "excellent" takes on street food; the "lovely" space with exposed-brick walls is overseen by a "pleasant" "hipster" staff, though there are sometimes "crazy waits" for weekend brunch, thanks in part to "bottomless mimosas and sangria."
Now for something entirely different: Mexican food in North Beach. Don Pisto's, a new venture by Peter Mrabe (former manager of Betelnut) brings tacos, tortas and ceviche to this cozy little spot...
A place with character in the heart of a touristy area. I was apprehensive about going to a Taco restaurant off of Columbus, where most tourists hang out. However, Don Pisto's was great - filled with happy, loud locals. Yes, it was really really loud but it has a great vibe. The food is served fast and hot, but not at the same time. They say it is because they "have a small kitchen so they...
Authentic Mexican food to share with friends. Three of us came here for dinner. The cerviche was fresh and flavourful. For tacos we tried the carne asada (grilled steak) and camarones (sautéed shrimp). Both were delicious. I really liked how each type of taco came with its own sauce paired to the meat. The complimentary corn chips were tasty and were a hit with the guacamole - good texture from...
Had an array of tacos: snapper, shrimp, & chicken. All were excellent and authentic. The complimentary salsa verde was also very good. Highly recommended place...easy to miss though since it is on a side street and not obviously marked...google maps on the phone is your friend.
The food here is absolutely delicious. It's truly outstanding and this would be a five-star review based on the food alone. However, the service and atmosphere were so unfavorable, they far outweigh the quality of the food itself. The restaurant's first floor is very appealing. However, we were seated in an expansion …
Amazing!! As a transplant to California from the farm in Iowa I was really skeptical about ordering the pork chops. Most chops are thin and void of flavor. This chop was so big it allowed for left overs. The flavor was simply amazing!! The chop was cooked to perfection (don't let s little pink in the middle scare you). The service was good nothing outstanding but good. I will be back!!
Don Pisto's is a Mexican Street Food sylish restaurant in the Heart of North Beach, San Francisco
Now for something entirely different: Mexican food in North Beach. Don Pisto's, a new venture by Peter Mrabe (former manager of Betelnut) brings tacos, tortas and ceviche to this cozy little spot formerly occupied by El Raigon. There are a few other things on the menu, too, but on the whole, choices are limited. That just means the crew at Don Pisto's better make every item count. In order to do that, everything is prepared and ordered on an as-need basis. Salsas and guacamole are made in small batches, fresh, throughout the day. Tortillas come fresh from La Palma Mexicatessen in the...
The acai berry sangria made here is a less-sugary, lighter treat than most sangria.
Check the address before you go since Don Pisto's won't scream out at you from the street. In fact, there's not even signage. Instead, look for the low-lit brick building with small red lights out front.
Do yourself a favor and don't even try. Bus it or cab it.
Pop in on Sunday nights and enjoy a beer for $2 (regular price, $4) and sangria for $3 (regular price, $5).
